Be aware that Windlass spears are untempered mild steel. They'll probably hold up just fine for normal cutting or use, but don't expect to be hewing shields without the blade bending.

Welcome to the forum (even though you've been here longer than I have)!
I only own 2 swords at the moment: Kalahai Ginunting (technically a bolo) and a Himalayan Imports Chiruwa Ang Khola Khukuri (which is technically a large knife). Out of the two I much prefer the khukuri. I love the look of it, the build quality is much better and its able to do more heavy duty tasks. The Ginunting functions more like a sword since its longer and lighter but its not made as well. I bought it cheap for $130 and while it performs better than the price tag would lead you to believe there are still blemishes and inconsistencies with it and it didn't come very sharp at all. The Khukuri cost me almost double the price and there was not a single thing I could knit pick about it. Himalayan Imports is a great company and I am happy to say that my first ever blade was something I can confidently say that I am proud of.
But I am very close to ordering a real sword. I am thinking of getting something from Valiant Armory. I have it narrowed down to three models. Two of them are Long Swords and one is an Arming Sword. The War Sword is Long Sword #1. I really like the look of the guard on this one, the point is pointy and not rounded off and there is an option for a grip spacer.
The Austrian War Sword is Long Sword #2. I much prefer the scabbard on this one and the price tag saves me a bit of money (though hot peening is not standard on this sword). I'm wondering if I can get the Austrian scabbard with the normal war sword, because if so I would be able to pull the trigger immediately.
And the third sword, the arming sword #1, is the Scottish One-Hander. Valiant Armory has a facebook page where Sonny Suttles (the owner of VA) uploads his finished works. One person commissioned this black and purple Scottish One-Hander that looks exactly like how I would have designed it. I was slightly miffed that someone else had the same design idea that I did and they beat me to it. I especially like the guard on the Scottish One-Hander despite it being anachronistic. It looks nice and seems the most sturdy and practical for catching an incoming blade. And the grip is on the small side which would be good for my hands since I wear medium sized work gloves while most everyone else I know wears large or extra large. Its also the lightest and shortest blade of the bunch.
Regardless of what I do end up buying, my Valiant Armory sword will likely be my favorite sword once I do get it.

For a first pole arm, I would suggest the Windlass/MRL Long-Bladed Hewing spear. It's big, badass, cheap, and easy to mount on the long shafts that KoA sells. I mounted mine on a short shaft with a butt cap for weight. Awesome spear! My next recommendation would be a Cold Steel Warhammer. They have'em on Amazon.com right now, cheap and free shipping. You'll have to assemble it, but it's not hard. They also have the CS Viking axe at a good price. I was into warhammers for a time. Never did buy one. I love the head design on the Cold Steel version the hammer is segmented into 4 sections to give it the best bite and the beak is long and pointy but Cold Steel is... I watch Skallagrim and his reservations towards the company is largely what influenced my distrust in the Cold Steel. That aside it should be noted for potential buyers that assembly is required for this one. I would prefer the screws to be a bit thicker so that they hold in the head better and, should any screws pop out, they would be easier to find. But with 7 screws per side it should be study assuming the buyer assembled it properly. I begrudgingly can recommend this one despite the Cold Steel name on it. KoA's selection of warhammers is small but there are a few good ones outside of Cold Steel, albeit a bit more pricey. Windlass has the widest selection. Not that long ago KoA did a review on the German Warhammer that looked impressive. It smashed through coconuts with minimal effort. My reservation with this one is that the beak is too wide and not pointy enough. Which is good for not getting your weapon stuck in a target and not being able to pry it out but it looks like it would dent rather than puncture plate armor. And then Lord of Battles has their Corvus Warhammer which has the added perk of a spike on top. The beak is again not very pointy but the spike makes that a moot point. But the langets don't span very far down the shaft so I feel like heavy use would cause the head to fly off the shaft which would be dangerous! And then Windlass has a late period warhammer with an all steel construction. The beak actually looks decent, but the hammer is a flat hammer. It won't "bite" as well as the others. And the weight looks rater light so I assume the shaft would be hollow much like how their maces are, which are prone to bending. Arms & Armor has one up there too which largely resembled the Lord of Battles Corvus warhammer but with a much, much higher price tag. I think $390 is much too high for a warhammer when everything else is <$100.

If you ask Sonny via email, he probably would do an Austrian War Sword style scabbard for a 'War Sword' if you wanted. Email him. He's always been responsive when I've worked with him.

I probably will do that at some point. I want to commission the sword in late November/early December so that I can receive it for my birthday which is in March. I missed the sword sale he had about a month ago. I had enough money saved up for it but I decided to go on a vacation instead. The vacation probably was the better decision, I enjoyed myself.
