Hello All... First of all, I hope I am posting to the correct place. I am in the process of creating a Historical Accurate 1st Century Roman Fulham Sword Scabbard for a Sword that I made for a client. Both the sword and this "Commissioned" sword are sold already. I am just posting to show the progress. Here is the Sword. Completely hand made here in my shop. It is a Fulham Sword. The Blade has been created from 1075 High Carbon Steel hardened and tempered to 55hrc. The Hilt is hand carved from European Boxwood. The Guard plate is handmade, inset into the guard and engraved with the owner's initials. The Pommel Finial is also hand made in Bronze. It weighs 1lbs 8oz. Has a P.O.B of 4 3/8" from the guard. This sword comes alive in your hand and feels like it is an extension of your being. (I don't want to give this one up... ) These hilt components can be found in museums in the U.K. and Europe. They are also catalogued in Christian Miks' book on the Study of Imperial Roman Swords. Please forgive the finger prints on the blade in the picture as I am new to taking pictures and didn't realize it until after I took them. It is beautifully polished... at 600 grit. Watch this thread for the creation of the Scabbard for this Sword... As I am "In-Process at the Posting of this opening) Again... I hope I am posting correctly without breaking any rules... if I am please someone "Gently" Correct me... I hope you like what you see... --Patrick

Here are the beginnings of the scabbard creation for the 1st Century Roman Fulham Gladius... Dying the 2 - 3oz. Veg-tanned Sheepskin Leather "Royal Blue" Per clients desires. Leather Dyed, Stretched, Glued to the Wood Core. The wooden core is made of basswood for this Scabbard, it is lined with linen for a smooth draw that holds the sword in place. It has been sealed to keep moisture out. The interior can be oiled, for extra protection from the elements if the client desires. THe seams are hand stitched alone the edge of the scabbard. This will be hidden later used the Brass Gutters. One long seam from the guard to the tip and one short one on the opposite side from the conversion point to the tip.

This Scabbard is based on and inspired by an Archeological "Find". The original Scabbard was for a MAINZ Gladius Sword which is a Wider and Longer Sword. The Design of the Scabbard Lockets and Plates had to be hand drawn and scaled down to make everything fit into the framework of the gutters on this Fulham Scabbard. Which, for the artwork becomes challenging because the "Repousse`" and "Chasing" would be smaller in both directions making the details a little bit harder to achieve. Top Locket Plate Finished with Repousse... Main "Termanial" Plate Repousse nearly finished. The Thin "raised" Border will have a rope pattern when completed. Scabbard Chape Plate... Repousse Completed... ready for cutouts.

Thank you for posting this. I've become quite interested in Roman gladii recently, encouraged by your earlier post about them.
As Scott said, your attention to detail and the care you take is impressive. The final result is equally so; I'm betting the finished scabbard will be a work of art!

This is, hands down, the best modern replica of a Roman gladius (in terms of beauty and historical accuracy) that I've ever seen before.
Amazing work.

It annoys me to no end to see how many replicas are historically inaccurate, when they could just as easily be made the right way. And to top it all off, you've created a singularly stunning sword, visually speaking. Excellent, excellent work!

Congratulations on your grandson!
And don't worry. I've seen you post on Facebook and you go to the right places. I think sales will pick up once word gets around. For my part, I'd love a sword from you but would have to save up since I've spent quite a bit recently on other things besides swords.

Damn nice, I am very impressed. I am not big fan of Roman stuff but I would love to own one of them some day in the future. I now know who I want to deal with if that time some day comes that I have free money for Roman sword.

Update: Here are a few pictures of the Chape area of the Scabbard. The "Chape Plate" that received the Repousse work now has the cut outs finished and the Chape has been made. The side "Gutters" in Brass are cut and fastened together. Making up the Lower area of the Scabbard. All of this is done by hand. The Repousse, the Cut outs and the Chape Finial are all solid brass. I will be casting the Suspension rings soon. Here are the Pictures: Attachments:
