Well the vid he made he used double mats. Against single mats I think the VA would have little trouble. If you like the idea of doing double or triple mats though, the templar might be better for you.

Ah yes I had totally forgotten about the VA Practical longsword, but I like that one very much too. It is definitely on my list for consideration. Can anyone comment on the handling? It looks like its lighter than some of the others but the point of balance is pretty far out there. Also does anyone know if it comes with a scabbard, because it doesn't seem to say. It is very tempting to go for an angus trim, but I think that before I spend that much money on a sword I want to get several in the sub 300 range so that I have a better idea of EXACTLY what I want in a top quality sword. I personally think the VA swords are a bit too light for me. I'll say this as many on myarmoury have said this. Better to shoot big and be happy then buy a few budget blades and wish you got the one really good one! Atrims, when compared to Albions and Arms and Armor swords are a good deal. Plus all the hilt work is removable so if you tire of it you pay someone to customize the handel, new pommel etc. Christian Fletcher does that and he sells Atrim. Even if you don't have money to do all the custom work at time of purchase, you can always save up money and mail it back to him after the sale to do custom work. He's a nice guy and I doubt he would turn you down. Not to say there is anything wrong with budget makes. Just because it cost $550 or so doesn't mean it is a bad buy. You get a great handling tough sword from Atrim for your money.

Unless you have an interest in multiple blade types and periods. Or just want more swords of course. And there are those that spend 5 years to collect 300 bucks and would need another 5 for another 250 for an atrim. Of course, what is an atrim gonna cost in 5 years? People have budgets...and for better or for worse, telling them they should spend more then their budget generally isn't good advice. Yes I personally do agree with the general myarmoury sentiment of 1 good sword is better then 3 swords you kinda like. But you know what, I still LOVE the gen 2 black price that Brian customized for me. Just because it's sub 300 doesn't mean it's a BAD sword. Is an atrim better? DUH. Is it 350 dollar better? Well, that depends on the person now don't it. And consider that my only sub 300 sword is the gen 2 black prince...although after all the customization, it cost more then 300 anyways ...I generally like the better stuff. I'm most likely not gonna buy another sub 300 sword for a very long time. The only sword that is even gonna be remotely close to price range will be the hanwei tinker bastard sword...and that is still a maybe. But I realize that others are not me. They don't want to spend 600+ on a sword...and that's perfectly okay. Like tsafa...I just don't see him ever buying some of swords I'm looking at . Also the OP has said this is his FIRST sword. He still doesn't know what he likes yet. So what happens when he saves that 550 bucks for an atrim, buys a XVIIIa atrim longsword and finds he hates that type? Shooting big and be happy works when you already know what you like in a sword. Not so much when your still learning what you want in a sword.

That is a good point. Normally I'd say it would resell well anyway but looking at Myarmoury's market place and seeing how long it is taking to sell a sword now with a few exceptions yeah I can understand. There are good budget swords out there and I am actually considering the Lucerene from Gen2 for a future sword too. I started with a Hanwei practical hand and half that I sold and lost money on. Same thing is probably going to happen to me with my DSA 12 century sword. I thought of the Gen2 12th century sword but it is a little too short for an XIIIA type longsword for my taste. That is true though that everyone definitely has their own budget. Just trying to add my 2 cents, thats all.

Well it is a GOOD concept . One I whole heartly agree with mind you . But consider that you have problems finding a sword you like as somebody already in this hobby. Now imagine if your new. And just because it's an atrim doesn't mean he'll automatically like it. Hell he could get an albion and not like it. He needs to learn what he likes first before he goes big. Trust me, my first sword cost me 750(+125 for the scabbard) bucks and it isn't a style of sword I particularlly like. As for the lucerne...it's a fun blade. My black prince, when I have good form can cut a double mat. When I have bad form, I can't cut a bottle in half. It REALLY lets you know how your doing in a cut. Oh and the stabbing is fun too .

Thanks for all the input guys.
Looks like I will be buying this sword sooner than I had originally planned, as my economic stimulus check just came in! Half is going to pay a speeding ticket, and the rest is going to buy me a sword! I'm so stoked can't wait to get one. ;D
And yes I do have interest in different types of blades and historical periods so I plan on buying several different swords.
And like some people have mentioned, I want to know exactly what type of sword I want before I spend the money on an Angus Trim or an Albion. I have never actually handled a functional sword, so any preference based on blade type is aesthetics only for now.
It looks like right now I have settled on the VA Atrim longsword, although I will think about it for a few more days, and if anyone has any other suggestions or comments feel free to chime in.

You made a good choice Longsword, you won't be disappointed. Trueswordsman(Jason) owns www.armsofvalor.com/ and inspects the swords before he ships them. Talk to him and he will make sure you get a good one. Here is a link of me accidentally cutting 3/8" leather with mine. It cut it like a hot knife though butter. /index.cgi?board=general&action=display&thread=5216

For those of you that have the sword, how sharp does it come, and does it need to be sharpened more to do some cutting?

It comes sharp and you don't need to sharpen it more to cut with it. Did you see what it did to the leather?

I will second Razor's statement. The VA Practicals I've seen were more than just sharp straight from the box. They were bordering on scary sharp! Plus there's no secondary bevel. So that edge is pretty much optimized for target cutting.

Oh and one more quick question, going by the oakeshott typology, the VA Atrim falls under type XIIa right?

Hello Longsword,
Everyone else seems to be out of them (determined by the phone calls we are getting), but AoV has a few of the Atrim longswords left. If you want us to set one aside for you let me know asap.

Yes, the blunts are still in stock. They did not sell as fast as the sharps.
