Folded 5160 Knives by J&L Custom CutleryReview & tests by Jason L McEntee Recently, I had L Driggers (fallen) heat treat another batch of blades for me. When he shipped them back, he included a couple of knives he just made, with a request for me to give them some testing. These were two of his very first folded steel blades, consisting of 5160 steel at 156 layers. Some specs: Dark Handled Knife Overall Length: 9 & 3/4" Blade Length: 5" Grip Length: 4 & 3/4" Weight: 5 oz. Handle Material: Honduran Rosewood Striped Handled Knife Overall Length: 9 & 3/4" Blade Length: 5" Grip Length: 4 & 3/4" Weight: 4 oz. Handle Material: Zebrawood First ImpressionsThe blades have subtle yet interesting patterns to them, with no delaminations. The edges were what I would describe as utility grade; sharp, but not shaving sharp. Both edges were well executed secondary bevels, with the zebrwood knife having a steeper edge angle; yet just as sharp as the rosewood knife. The handle contruction on both pieces were very solid, with the rosewood knife being of full tang construction, while the zebrawood knife is a hidden tang setup. TestingI gave each knife an initial sharpness test using sheets of paper and water bottles strapped to a cutting stand. Next, a brief beating against a wood block, to test the heat treat, durability, and handle construction. Finally, I repeated the same sharpness tests, to test the edge retention. ResultsBoth pieces held up well. Neither one showed any visible damage or rolling to the edges. Both tips survived the stabs into the wood block without bending or breaking. Only the rosewood knife seemed to have dulled just a hair, but it did have a more shallow edge angle than the zebrawood knife. The zebrawood knife still cut ferociously with a power strike in the final test. All in all, these are a pair of quality knives. I expect L Driggers (fallen) 's folding and pattern welding to only improve as time goes on. DisclosureI have a business relationship with the maker of these knives, as L Driggers (fallen) does the heat treating for the blades I make. I was NOT offered any sort of discount for his services for doing this review; however I was allowed to keep the knives.

If you have the money I can give you 30in maybe more.
These were just made to see if I could forge weld. Every thing else coming from me will have a lot better pattern.

The sword is the most agile I have ever had the pleasure of handling. The craftsmanship is a pure joy to look at too

Send the PM, we'll see what I can do. But to tell you the true I will have to wait until I can get the forge press built before I can do sword length. I would hate to try to hammer out a pattern welded steel long blade by myself. Mono steel I can do long lengths.

No rush big guy, I'd like to be able to put $$$ in your hand first! Wouldn't it be great to have an extra $12-$15k to buy a commercial power hammer?!

I had a feeling it would be JTF2. Those guys are Olympic level athletes and are trained like spartans. I used to have a dream of joining JTF2 when I was younger. I always said, what Canada lacks in Military budget we make up for in training. Especially when it comes to JTF2

I had a female friend who was married to a Mountie for some time, and she said he was like a machine! Like straight outta Terminator, the Mountie training is pretty serious in your neck of the woods. I've been through the police academy here in the U.S (even did a stint in some S.W.A.T/Active Shooter Response training) and it's NOWHERE near military "level"......mores the shame.

With 12 to 15k I could get a power hammer and hydraulic forge press.

I'll be sure to add $13,000 extra to your PayPal account after you make my sword then. Sound good? 😉

Sounds good but it will be a while before I can get the forge press built if ever, things keep coming up to take the money to build it.
VoltanThanks for the Tixie picture, you know to keep me happy she has to be in there. Just how old is she.

VoltanThanks for the Tixie picture, you know to keep me happy she has to be in there. Just how old is she. Lyn, Trixie is eight years old, but still thinks she's a puppy. She still loves to play, be it ball or frisbee outside, or keep-away with her toys inside. She was outside with me when I did the testing, but I didn't think to get her in the video. I guess because she usually camera-bombs on her own, lol. We'll be going for a walk shortly...

(I know there already IS one, but she's such a beautiful pup)!
