The tip of your nakago has 'blued'. Had you been grinding it by any chance

It was blue like that when I got it. The nakago In general was pretty beat up. The Ha side was pretty bent up. I straightened it with a ball peen hammer. the grind is fairly uneven as well. I believe it will be serviceable. For the price I am not complaining. The blade is in fairly good shape, with only some minor scratching along the blade.

cool steve, gonna like this when it's done. Would you entertain carving some celtic knotwork into the handle - I would. Or are you trying to keep it japanese style?
Re. to tsuba or not to tsuba? Maybe ask Salvatore. Go the tsuba.

One pin is enough, if you incorrectly sink the second one then the pins will fight each other putting stress in places you don't want stress.

Yeah, i agree with BW that considering these are custom fit cores you should really only need one peg. It should be more than enough.

I know a guy who incorrectly sunk a second mekugi-ana and he struck a watterbottle and the pins shifted because they were fighting each other, the tsuka came apart and the blade did its impression of a helicopter.

I did not have any trouble Getting a nice precise fit, so they will both be single pinned. The tanto grip fits well enough to cut without a pin, I won't but could.
I was thinking of doing Knot work on the guard. I am not sure if that would go well with the dragon themed pieces. the walnut grip will be smooth satin finished to show off the wood. Wait till you see it with finish on ;D It is only sanded to 120 git in these pics so you really cant see the grain yet.
