Hello,
so, even though I already posted a few messages, I'll do my presentation.
First of all, I stumbled upon this forum a few weeks ago (When I'm interested in sth a do a lot of research) while I was looking for information about katanas and other japanese blades (wakizashis and tantos) and the different sellers/bladesmiths. I learned a lot theses last couple days I have to say. But I already ordered a custom build katana before I actually got to follow the advice's. But more on that later, once I receive it, I'll make a full review. Yes, it's my first sword...and first blade too. So, yeah I'm a noob^^
Let me say that some of you guys are just...well...you know so much stuff, it's actually crazy
I'm quite young I might add (don't worry I'm not underage), compared to most of you guys and I'd like to start a collection, but knowing me, I'm not sure I'll even get to that... For the past 2-3 years I've had changing "interest topics". Starting with cars, reptiles, guns, blades,... (Ok, I always liked cars and guns ^^) but for different reasons I put theses projects on hold or I simply moved on. And as I said before, I informed myself a lot...(to the point that I actually knew a lot more about lizards and snakes than most shop-working-guys (yeah forgot the name xD)) Just for information: the snake on my profile pic is a 'corallus caninus', very beautiful species, and very interesting. They are actually yellow or red when they're new-born, and at the age of 2-3 years their coloration changes to this flashy green. All corallus-family snake has an awesome looking pattern.
Movies and tv series: I know my fair share...and I've watched so many different things these past years.
Oh, one big thing I forgot: I'm very interested in finance (stock-market,...) And I intend to reach some highly paid job at some point^^ If you put enough effort (sometimes it's just luck) you can reach it! Just like some of you; at first you were like 'oh I would like to become a blade-smith and all but that's too hard...bla bla bla' but, once you tried, and trained a lot, you saw that you actually pulled it off. Believe in yourself!!
But there's an issue...I forget a lot of stuff (mainly because I'm very curious, so I guess there's not enough storage capacity in my brain ). I'm the worst at memorizing names.
So yeah, if you guys wanna chat, I know a few things about every available topic^^ but I'm not specialized in one particular thing. My main interest topic is, and will always be, cars.
I live in central Europe btw. Oh yeah, and sorry for my english level, it's not as good as I wish it was, but considering it's my 5th language...guess it's ok^^.
Why did I suddenly want to collect blades?? Well, I'm currently planning to switch my bedroom with an office-room, so I'll have more space. And I said to myself, hell, I gotta use some special decoration (yes to show off too ^^). And I searched for days for a few items I wanted.
-It started with some tank replica, but I did not want to spend 80 bucks on some sick-looking tank
-moved on to a mortar shell, but the only ones that are being sold, are all busted up and rusted scrap pieces from WWII...not really what I was looking for. So I sent a few emails to big time weapon industries (like HK in Germany,...) But they do not sell non-functional weapons, and they do not sell to civilians at all. So I talked to a dude that has a startup, and I'll send him a pic of what I want (either mortar shell, or tank ammo (intelligent ammo maybe^^)) and this guy just makes it out of metal (yop, laser cutting and assembling metal sheets, or full metal whatever I want^^).
-Another item I'd like to display on my desk would be a car piston (full, not only the head) or a turbo and chrome it (shiny metal look, almost mirror-like). The piston is cheaper, so I'm still going to do that ^^
- Katana: always liked and kinda looked up to ninjas(when I was younger)...and all their different gear (shuriken,kunai,...) (yeah don't tell me that ninjas were not the main users of katanas^^)
While I did my research I got a little carried away with the enormous amount of blades that are being produced at the moment. I always liked military stuff in general (the different special forces even more) so I'm considering to buy at some point a kukri and a karambit. (I cannot say I want a ballistic knife or I'll end up getting raided by the secret service...but I want one xD)
Same as the most of you here, I guess the problem is the money...man...I'd need a billion €/$ to make all my dreams come true
Guess I covered it pretty much Oh, and I watch a lot of knife-makers videos on YT, unfortunately the custom ones are so expensive...(I do not work at the moment ^^ but ironically I spent a few hundred bucks on custom katana...go figure xD).
If you guys have a question, just let me know
Peace out, Nathan
P.S. I know this is not very structured, but hey, it's almost 3AM here^^ Guess I spent sth like...5h reading stuff since yesterday and 1h writing this crazy post ^^

Welcome to the forum. That's a nice looking snake, do you keep any reptiles?

Welcome - no worries about not being a collector of pointy things. Many members have small collections and multiple interests. Some people get hooked on the hobby and some just enjoy a sword or two.

thanks guys adrian Jordan: hehe, I sure will. Scott : no I do not, unfortunately...At first I was so amazed by all the species you can own that I forgot the maintenance and stuff like that. Many people own reptiles, more as a collection...that should not be the case, considering it's a living thing. Ok, reptiles don't give 2 **** if you don't "play" with them or show affection xD they're not exactly what one would call house animals^^ Keep in mind that they are wild after all, so they are unpredictable One big aspect you want to consider is the food (snakes eat 1 mouse/rat a week up to 1 a month; depends on age/size/gender/species. [python regius have an habit of fasting, it can go up to 11 months, and that's completely fine; as long as they don't get too weak/or loose weight, what could then be a refusal of eating due to stress or illness] Lizards tend to be more insectivorous (there are also vegetarians^^ and the combination of both) so you should calculate your expenses on insects. Considering they eat twice a day (a lot more work to feed and clean than for a snake; the more they eat...they more they poop xD) you need some pretty serious food stock. If you don't want to start to breed crickets, cockroaches, fly larvae,...it can be a budget (usually you don't buy just one lizard, it's boring both for him and for you ^^ the great part of the terraria is the observation of it's behavior) Another big investment other than the animal itself (most iguanas cost less than 100$ in my region, a python regius 'sunset' pattern goes up to 30k...) is the terrarium/aquarium, a huge one with a "cabinet" under it costs max 400 bucks (€ and $ having a pretty close value at this time, there's no need to put a currency on this^^ And I don't mention all the UVB light spots/branches/bedding/hidings/... Oh well...I got a little carried away^^ so yeah, I cannot own lizards, because of lack of space, I don't want to put it in my bedroom (but at first I was so blind-sighted that I did not inform myself enough about the cons) for the following reasons: -If you feed it in the morning (which you kinda have to xD) and If it poops right away...well no need to tell you the stinky smell you'll have once you get home in the afternoon (excrement's were literally being cooked over the whole damn day^^ because some lizards require 35-40° C...) and if it's in your bedroom...well... -Food stock -Holidays: if you leave for a month, there's no problem, your snake can take it, but lizards...man, there's no chance...so they kinda need constant attention, like kids^^ -Expensive: as you might have noticed...I really like high-grade stuff, luxurious even, but the problem is financing^^ So, I would be very tempted to buy some crazy semi-rare reptile just for the looks of it. (But I wanted to start with Pogonas Vitticeps, very cheap actually (20-50€ piece) Snakes are not my thing I guess...I'm really not very comfortable around them (sure, one gets used to it, but they strike soooo fast...crazy) but I wouldn't mind having a couple in my house, and having some guy come over to take care of them xD I wouldn't need to touch them, just observe. Btw, their eyes are so, "catchy" (?) you find yourself staring at them pretty fast william : Yeah, I don't like a lot of swords actually ^^ sabers and stuff like that are not my thing, but to time to time there is one that you cannot say it's just "ok", there are some excellent pieces out there. I guess my car-love takes over at all levels, and I don't think that if I start to collect them, I'll say someday I've enough of them. My goal as a first performance car is a gtr R-35 nismo (to start) and the list is loooong...^^ well

Welcome, Nathan!
We have quite a few people here with everything from single swords to large collections - so nothing to worry about there. Some of us who thought we'd have a sword or two didn't end up that way. (I broke double digits a while ago, and I'm enjoying it a bit more than I'd admit.)
I do love the profile picture as well, it's beautiful.
What custom katana maker did you go with, if you don't mind me asking? Katana aren't quite my biggest interest, but I always keep my eyes open.

Well that's the thing, I was kinda avoiding to talk about the maker until my katana arrives. On this forum people do not actually like this company a lot, which is weird I have to say, but on their website and FB everyone is pleased with everything. (No you don't buy 380+ excellent reviews and 25k likes on FB ) But I'll say it, just to please you^^ It's Swords of Northshire. Up to this point, the customer service (Bryce) has been very kind and stuff^^ even tough they kinda screwed up. But more on that later! I'm planning a full review of the katana and the seller, already found the appropriate forum post. ^^ Thanks to all of you :$

It's perfectly fine. You didn't have to tell me there. I was just curious. I know a couple of stories of people who have had trouble with SoN, but others who have been just fine. Regardless - I'll really be glad to see a review when you do get it! I admittedly have been wanting to do a few reviews, but the weather's finally been good enough for test cutting - so hopefully I'll be getting some up soon, myself. Just remember that opinions are like - well, ahem, everyone has them. I hope your sword is awesome.

I looked into keeping snakes but it wouldn't have worked out, and I was told I was not allowed to get anything venomous. There's a nice mix of reptiles in the area we moved to though, so it's all good.

Just remember that opinions are like - well, ahem, everyone has them. I hope your sword is awesome. You're right. Sometimes, things go sideways because of customers, most don't really know what they want, and when they get sth, they're not pleased...well surprise! You gotta be pretty sure about the thing you're buying, otherwise you'll end up discrediting (maybe honest and good) sellers/producers The world is full of ignorant and selfish people anyways Scott : everyone likes sth different I can't stand spiders for instance... but why the hell would you want a venomous animal?? You talking about Cobra's maybe?^^ heard that's the new hype. Because of CITES and other stuff you need some special authorizations to even own a rare reptile...now imagine a venomous one... Plus, you have to agree that is is pretty dangerous if you cannot handle them properly. Snakes are like Houdini^^ you leave the glass door open by let's say...0.5 cm and you're done. And then you have the kinda people that buys exotic animals, keep them a certain period, and then, once they no longer want it, they just release it into the wildness. Unless it's Australia or Africa...it can be dangerous freeing snakes like this, not just for the humans, but for the local fauna and later on, flora, too. Man, 'cause of you I started looking at reptiles again...dammit^^ I think a nic red Teju( Salvator rufescens) or a black-white one (Salvator merianae) could be fun. (If you ignore the fact that they can eat small-sized chickens, so your hand might do the job as well xD)

Was thinking a red bellied black or tiger snake actually. I'm in Australia so they're native species. As said these days I make do with the local wildlife, like this little one that spent a while living on the driveway recently.

As said these days I make do with the local wildlife, like this little one that spent a while living on the driveway recently. Well, it does look badass ^^ Australia is pretty scary I have to say...snakes come out of the toilets, kangaroos fight you, crocodiles walk around, sharks at the beach, venomous spiders,... Yeah some are cliches but you get the point ----------------- BTW, If you guys have infos on how to get good karambits and kukris, I'm all ears. I already read the concerning topics, but I'm not convinced^^ kukris are sold by a lot of companies, but they are not good. And not really authentic. It should not weigh more than 400-800gr...some (like kukri house, ex kukri house,...they are all the same actually) do not respect that, and you get a tang width of 1cm...that's kinda huge IMO. Tora blades seem to be the best history-accurate kukri sellers, from what I saw and heard. YT reviews compare theses blades to each other) What do you guys think?? Got any knifemakers that do not charge 500 bucks for a custom fixed blade? Thanks
