I been looking for a gambeson, for a future purchase. Just to have on the list (along with jack chains). I noticed Reliks has the Get Dressed For Battle heavy Gambeson. It looks quite good to me. Does anyone have experience with this?
i remember reading somewhere that a gambeson could at times stop even arrow fire, and was over all quite good for protection, especially when worn under mail. Would the GDFB Gambeson faithfully do this sort of job? If not, what is a low cost option to a form of padded armour that would do the same job?

Good use of the bit from Holy Grail. I laughed a little louder than I should.
Personally, never have used any gambeson myself. I would also like to hear from others on the forum how this gambeson works out.

Never seen the GDFB gambeson up close but judging from other stuff in that price range, it most likely falls very short of the originals. Not enough layers, not properly stuffed nor sewn. Would probably turn away most cuts but thrusts will go right through I'd bet.

Going by the pictures the GDFB gambeson will move around a lot when you move. Not a big problem until you put a belt on or some armour.

The GDFB gambesons use poly-fill for padding. The Lord of Battles models use wool felt padding, and will 'breathe' better than the GDFBs. And, in my opinion, look better. The GDFBs make you look like the 'marshmallow man' from Ghostbusters. Ha......Chris

There can be much variances in gambesons. I have two. One being made for me and the other is a Lord of Battles. The one made for me was made by a gentleman in Canada and is on the thin side and I would not trust it to stop much. On the other hand it’s great under mail or other armour and allows me to move freely and is the most comfortable. The Lord of Battles, www.kultofathena.com/product.asp?item=SNMC7101E&name=Modifiable+Gambeson+with+Optional+Half-Sleeves+-+Natural comes with full or half sleeves. Both gambesons have detachable sleeves. It is better made than the other and makes me feel invincible save for sharp pointy objects coming through. But that is true with other armour as well. At the same time movement is more difficult, very much like being wrapped in a good rug is the best way I can describe the feeling. I have additional soft amour and plate to wear with both. The second gambeson I think will stop any cuts attempted on me. Which is a good thing as my mail will not properly fit over it. With the first one I feel much safer with mail and have better freedom of movement. The second gambeson is a better stand alone jobby, although both can be improved on with additional supporting pieces. I am definitely like my gambesons. Here is a video I made using material equal to the gambeson, and also by Lord of Battles. I don’t need the skirt with the Lord of Battles but prefer with the lighter shorter gambeson. Just to give an idea.

Most certainly sir. When I came off the field my left arm was longer than my right.

I used tent canvas, 12oz I think, maybe lighter its been years. Sewed with nylon tent repair thread I had from my army days. I grew up on a farm so I had a supply of horsehair

I just imagine myself in a horse hair gambeson and a much too tight lorica segmentata. When my horse hair allergy raises a sneezing attack I'd go pop like a fragmentation grenade!
