I really hate the Bo-Hi feature on Katana swords. Come at me

Any particular reason? I like a lighter handling blade, don't care about tachikaze, and dislike the way most budget swords bo-hi terminate(just kind of peter out, rather than have a nice, crisp termination), so it's a mixed bag for me. I've heard of models where the blade is fatter on the mune section after the hi than the body, and the lack of a smooth surface between the two can affect cutting.

On some folded blades with bo-hi you can really see the folds of polished correctly. That's the only reason I like bo-hi. I agree with what Adrian said. Poor termination seems to be a common thing in lower priced blades.

I hate having to clean and polish them.

We do still see the poor termination on nihonto also. Mostly older tachi and Katana blades. I'm mostly convinced that nice bohi termination is just for aesthetic reasons.

Just my personal preference, not that I would turn away a great sword just because it had one.

Hate is a strong word. Both of my katanas and iaito have a bo-hi. The katanas were the first swords that I purchased and thought that was the way to go. The iaito has one because I wanted it as similar to the other katanas as possible. In the beginning the sound helped helped and my Mushashi, actually both, but the Mushashi more so was lighter and fast which impressed me. Now if I was to buy another katana it would be without a bo-hi. I feel the bo-hi to some degree has an adverse affect on a cut and the additional weight would be welcomed.

Ive always been the opposite. Most of my katana have been non bo-hi. So for me, its neat to have them. I like how they feel when practicing kata

Just my personal preference, not that I would turn away a great sword just because it had one. Why concentrate on what you dislike instead of enjoying what you do like?

Most of my Japanese style reproductions do not have bo-hi as I just like the look better. The few with bo-hi do not bother me at all.
I always say to buy what you like regardless to be satisfied.

I like them so much I got two on the one blade. I can go either way. But I do favor intriguing geometry. And the way the spine goes from full to minimum and back to full again is really neat. I think I see more Unokubi Zukuri in my future. Weighs the same as a wider blade but feels lively. If it were an airplane I'd call it flickable.

My first Iaito and Katana didn't have Bo-Hi. My second did, for the Tachikaze.

I really hate the Bo-Hi feature on Katana swords. Come at me :) You just caught the bug. If you stick with the hobby, then tell me if you feel the same in five years. I say that because I had similar feelings about the bohi. I came to appreciate them over time.

Same here, I didn't like bo-hi blades to begin with. I thought they looked too much like bayonets. But I knew nothing back then. It takes time to really appreciate Japanese swords..a lot of time!!

And no one has mentioned they make the blade sing.

Are there any videos out there where you can actually hear this? I don't practise Iaido or cut anything with my swords.
