This may seem a bit naïve and blundering, still I`ll dare nonetheless… I have an m1867 cavalry saber that I’m very fond of. But it is my only authentic saber, so I have no other reference points. Now the opportunity arose to acquire one of the aforesaid models. Sadly I can’t afford both.
Now I know we have some - very - knowledgeable gentlemen on this forum, which I would like to ask for their opinion…
Since both swords seem to be – roughly – of the same dimensions, but on being accounted as infantry, the other as cavalry, what would be their main differences, especially regarding their weight distribution / balance and effects on handling? I read somewhere else the 1867 would handle rather nimbly, while the 1896 felt “like a dog”. What are your thoughts on this?
Swiss enlisted cav 1876 (top), 1896 (bottom)
Swiss Cav Officer saber (top) Infantry Officer or Cav dress saber (?)
Infantry and cavalry sabers don't compare. They are functionally unique to their trade, as mounted and foot combat have completely different variables. There are 4 blade variations for foot officers. Not knowing which you are refering to is a handicap.
I'm particularly a slave to cav sabres, so my adviceis to save your money and find an 1867 officers saber; one with an English style blade. Worth waiting for.
As for the 1896 enl cav saber. It is a creature of the turn of the century rejection of swords as serious weapons. It is 40% less in mass than the '67. Balance isn't all thet terrible. Hilt is a bit cramped and not a lot of percussive weight for cutting.
Get neither. Get the 67 cav officers big sabre.
contact e.a. mueller on ebay and tell him what you are looking for. He will try to sniff one out for you.
