Here 2 squirrels out my front door, one is eating dog food, the other a nut I left on the ramp railing. As you can see my large German Shepherd doesn't care at all. Since I don't have any outside cats I have a lot of squirrels around the house again. Have a lot of pecan trees around the house, plus oak trees that produce a lot of nuts.

My Lab would stand for that. We have tons of squirrels; neighbor has a bunch of palm trees that provide homes for them and they like the mulberries and seeds from some of my trees. Odin, my lab, is out there running back and forth trying to catch the little buggers every morning. I think they like taunting him from the neighbor's roof. He's gotten one that I know of.

We have rabbits, lots of rabbits on my area. And they nest under my sheds/workshop and bury their nests in my lawn. My two Italian Greyhounds could care less.

I hate rabbits. They are evil. I almost got lost on a mountain due to a bunch of them, lost for 18 hours. Long story. Don't let them fool you, get rid of them, they are EEEEVVVIIILLLLL!!!!

My Lab used to lay and watch the squirrels for hours. He seemed genuinely entertained by them. Never made a move to hurt any.

I don't mind eating them, though I suspect they would purposefully choke me.
I TOTALLY hate them..................and if anyone was in my situation, they would too............

I've always liked squirrels...I don't know why. Sure they are tree rats...but they seem cool to me.

My wife currently has 2 Southern Flying Squirrels (nocturnal and totally legal to own in the state of Texas). She used to have 5, including the parents and a sister to Archie and Hector (named after classical figures in literature). Unfortunately, Penny (Penelope, the matriarch, also the most incredibly tame squirrel ever) passed away, as did Otis (short for Oddyseus, Penny's mate), and Cassie (Casiopeia), Archie and Hector's sister. We got them from an older lady who used to rehab all manners of small animals, but has since passed away. I don't have any pics of them on my phone, but will try to post at least a couple of pics when I get a chance. Fox squirrels on the other hand are not easy to tame, and will do whatever they want.

Would you mind showing us a photo ? They sound pretty cool ! Here they are Penny (Penelope) Penny (being her super tame self) Penny "Flying" inside our house Otis (Odysseus) when he was all buff Fat Otis (Penny was pregnant) Penny and her "brood" Archie (Archibald), Hector, and Cassie (Cassiopeia) Archie and Hector (they each have their separate box btw) - since there are no females around, they behave very well towards each other (no fighting, etc). One thing before trying to raise squirrels - you MUST know what you're doing, since regular squirrel (and/or bird) feed isn't enough - they also need lots of protein. And keeping them locked up all the time isn't good for them either... they must have space to play/fly, or else they can revert back to their wild selves. So, if my wife were to post on here, she'd say not to do it unless you've done TONS of research, and were able to devote lots of love and attention to them.

Your squirrels are cuteness personified, and I'm really impressed by your emphasis on proper care and feeding, too many people neglect that with their animal friends.

Thanks for the kind words. It's imperative for new owners/keepers to understand how much work (and love) it takes to properly take care of Flyers or anything similar. My wife didn't do it on a whim: she's always wanted to be a vet, but the nearest veterinary school is approximately 7 hrs away one way, preventing her from getting a degree in it. She also did tons of prior research on the squirrels (habitat, behavior, special requirements, etc) about a year in advance of speaking to the lady we got Penny from (about a 9 hr drive up to Buna, TX - yikes!), and then "interviewed" with her for a couple hours before she allowed my wife to take her.
When my daughter mentioned to her friends that we had Flyers, they kept on saying "you mean Sugar Gliders", so my wife decided to take Penny and the boys over to the elementary school and do a short presentation to my daughter's 1st grade class a few years ago.

They do look a fair bit like a sugar glider or a feathertail glider I must admit

OUR squirrels loot the bird feeder - despite an inverted SS bowl at the base. They jump out of the trees. Next step: barbed wire. Or just add some chili pepper. Supposedly birds lack the receptors for perceiving the hotness of chili's and will pig out, whereas squirrels do have the receptors and will freak out and leave the seed alone.

OUR squirrels loot the bird feeder - despite an inverted SS bowl at the base. They jump out of the trees. Next step: barbed wire. I saw a solution to this once: Put the feeder on a pole and grease (Vaseline was shown) the pole regularly. Supposed to keep the squirrels from climbing up. Never had a chance to try it as I don't feed birds any more. Edit: I found this suggestion on a page: For about four dollars, a Quincy, Illinois, homeowner has enjoyed 99 percent squirrel-proof feeders – using a Slinky. He attached one end of the Slinky to the top of the pole and allowed the rest to hang so that the pole runs up through the center of the Slinky. Typically, he says, "the squirrels will try to jump onto the pole, grab the Slinky and promptly find themselves dumped to the ground."
