New pictures ! updated 3/1/16 Hi ! Im new to the forum and I specialize in Filipino blades; this is my 1st post and my 1st Katana video. I will be posting Filipino Blades soon. I bought this sword from the ebay dealer " tsunami-dragon ". It cost me 389ish CAD$ free shipping and I was able to ask Even " tsunami-dragon " boss I suppose if He could give me a free extra Tsuka if I paid for it to get wrapped with Hishigami and imported Japanese leather. He was kind enough to agree. Cool dude. This is just the unboxing. Enjoy the vid cheers ! SPECS: - Blade Shape - Shinogi Zukuri - Hatori Hanzo engraving both side - Kobuse lamination structure 1045 core with 1095 jacket - Sori - Torii Sori - Blade length measured from the Motohaba - 27 inches and 3 quarters - Tsuka length - 11 inches Wrapped with Hishigami in Henerimaki style. - Overall length 39 inches and 3 quarters - Blade width measured from Motohaba - 1 inch and a quarter - Blade thickness at the Habaki 11 mm - Hamon - Notare Midare with a touch of Toran - Fittings are copper. - Tsuba is Iron Bamboo type He also made a mistake sending me a black war fan Saya which is awesome but I ordered the Kill Bill devil face Black Saya. He is now in the process of sending me the right Saya and a Horn Saya both with Sageo for 25$ good deal People ! let me know if I got this blade for a good price for the quality ! thanks ! Seems to be a decent blade to me. Tsuka looks good and the blade seems nice. The only thing I dislike is the "reverse" polish job, meaning that it's the ji part instead of the hamon that is cloudy white. But that's just aesthetics.. Also, it seems that the yokote is geometric which is nice! Waiting for the pics... Enjoy your beers!

I'm about to order another custom blade. What is the widest blade you've heard off measured at the Motohaba ? I'm aiming for a beefiest Katana without leaving the Traditional Japanese measurement ?

I wouldn't call those "traditional", but they have 37mm wide blades at motohaba: Hanwei Practical XL, or the more expensive version with the nicer tsuka the Practical PLUS XL www.kultofathena.com/product.asp?item=SH6001XPF&name=Hanwei+Practical+Plus+XL+Katana

Hey, I'm a Filipino sword enthusiast too! Nice to see another one since most of the oldies have apparently left SBG for good.
One thing to note, I don't think that there's any lamination, sorry. I think the entire blade is pattern-welded steel. You can see how the welding lines continue and trail off, and you can't see any lamination line. I'd be happy to be proven wrong though, but the price is way too low for proper lamination.

Don't worry they probably didn't leave forum. They are probably just dead. How refreshing... Croccxfizchxzxio is right, I think. It appears that they just polished the edge to a mirror finish to mimic a transition from folded steel, to mono steel. Happens a lot, and is something we've been battling with eBay forges for a couple of years, now. Another thing to is regarding the lamination method. Either A. It's a flat out lie, because you'd be having the folded 1095 on the outside and cutting edge. Which kind of defeats the purpose of 1095 since it should be the cutting edge only or B. You have 1045 as your cutting edge. Which is completely backwards from how it should be. Buying any type of laminated blade from eBay is a bad idea. We've proven it many, many times. And tried very hard to explain it. Sadly, the eBay sellers just keep selling them and we can't inform everyone in time before they buy them. Your sword is perfectly usable, so don't get too discouraged. They're just throw things like folding and lamination styles in there as buzzwords to get a little more money out of people who don't know how to tell a difference and want something fancier than your standard mono steel blades.

Thanks for your review Mike! Learning lots. I just wished I joined this forum much earlier before I bought my Katana. I did read a lot about Katanas for a year and a half before I decided on buying 1. I'm not an expert on lamination. But the core is 1045 and edge is 1095 I just checked site. Offcourse this is assuming it is a Kobuse like they claim. I will post the eBay link where I got this blade from and a better picture of the Hamon without Blue filter. At work right now. I think the filter is throwing off some people. Is it a true clay tempered blade at least? The Ha of the blade does have a bluish hue to it compared to the rest of the blade above the Hamon.

It does appear to be true DH, but I doubt it is actually a laminated blade as opposed to just folded steel.

Indeed, I also believe it not to be laminated. Out of the dozens of reviews, we've gotten maybe 2-3 real laminations and most of them were after the user caught the fake and demanded a real one. The one that I have, I'm unsure if it's laminated. I'm leaning more towards yes because I put a different polish on it to get rid of the fake lamination then brought it up later only to find a lamination line very close to the edge. It is consistent on both sides despite trying to polish it out. However, there is not much of a difference in the metal so I believe it to be either same or very close steel types, not the kinds I asked for.

There won't be any visible lamination line on a kobuse style blade... Kobuse as an outer jacket of hard steel and a softer steel core. I also have my suspicions though on the blade being truly a kobuse construction or simply a maru folded steel blade. Maybe if you take a close look at the mune you can distinguish the two different types of steel...

Fair point, I was mixing kobuse and reverse kobuse in my head. The line should still be visible on the mune if the jacket has a gap. The only for sure way to tell is to cut it and look at the cross section but that isn't a good idea while it's functional.

That's assuming they laminated correctly and there is a gap where the core is between the jacket. On mine they almost entirely had the sides covered to the edge. The polish is a little rough but that line near the bottom is there all the way down on both sides despite being re-polished a few times due to the rust it came with/get rid of the fake lamination polish. There is so little difference between the metal that I wouldn't be surprised if it it was the same type of metal, the core unfolded and the jacket folded. Attachments:

Fell asleep after my post last night. At work now.

Here is mune of a 100% folded steel blade. There is no unfolded steel in the middle of the mune.

There is a link above for Wang-katana2011's kobuse blade on ebay. The ebay post claims the blade is kobuse, and shows a cross-section picture of kobuse lamination: But the blade in the ebay post shows a laminated line on the bevels (ji). The pics of the blade does not match the description in the ebay post. Very suspicious. Sorry for the hijack but I thought this needed to be pointed out.

No need to apologize, you actually make a good point. It is highly suspicious if even their show photo is obviously a lie. I checked through even's and it doesn't appear that he made the same mistake on the few kobuse laminations I looked through, at least there is that.

Don't forget there's kobuse and gyaku kobuse. Gyaku will show the lamination lines above the ha, regular kobuse will show it on the mune. www.ksky.ne.jp/~sumie99/construction.htmlI have a kobuse blade that clearly shows the lamination- I'll post pics tonight after work. Kobuse for around $3-400 should be possible as it's the most basic lamination method.
