For me it's just a looks thing but if I like the rest of it it's not a deal breaker. I only have four Katanas three of which have Hi but I do like the looks of the no Hi better because it doesn't look as modern. More of an ancient look without the Hi. Are a lot of old katana with hi though. www.aoijapan.com/katana-kiyomitsu-saku-noIt is more aesthetics I guess - to answer to the question. I don't mind if the sword has or not the hi.

For me it's just as much of a performance issue as an asthetic preference. No hi blades tend to be better cutters because of the heft of the blade and I buy swords to use and to cut with. Yes blades with bo hi can cut but they don't cut as well, as in it takes more effort, than a no hi blade simply because bo hi blades don't have the same heft that a no hi blade has. Other than that I just don't think bo hi on a katana blade looks as attractive as blades with no hi.

Derzis, I know they had Katana way back that had Hi it's just to me no Hi looks older. It's because most other ancient swords had smooth blades like the Roman and Greek swords for example. It's just my opinion but like I said it's not a deal breaker just a preference.

I know, it was not an attack to you Gunnar, sorry if you got it like this. I find this hi vs no-hi argument just a subjective thing. What I am sure I will never do, on the other hand, is to buy a sword for its fittings.

I only started collecting swords and katanas in the early 2000s. Back then, it seemed like most production katana were no-hi. Now, it seems the tables have turned, and most have hi. I can really like the koshirae on a katana, but then its got hi. That is sort of a deal-breaker for me, because I already have some katanas with hi. As others have said, one with no-hi might hold up better, and be a better cutter. Also, I just think the no-hi is more aesthetically pleasing to the eye.
Klaver, if this were three years ago, I would jump at this katana in a no-hi version. As it is, I have too many katanas. I wouldn't be able to buy this Honshu one without having to sell or trade one of my other katanas, or unless I found it at a used and discounted price. I do wish you well with the production of this katana, though. I think its very cool looking!

As others have said, one with no-hi might hold up better...The key word there is 'might'. Unless someone is calculating the drag a hi adds on a blade and tells us we can feel it - taking out the human factor - it is urban mythology for me. Used for it's intent, there is no difference. Come and say you want a heavier sword (no-hi) because makes you feel good about yourself, I can buy that. But not these myths, that for me are in the same category with 'others have said, a katana might cut a tank'.
