With the majority of these saya's, is it genuine laquer or just spray paint? Comparing them to a Hanwei saya, ebay ones feel thin and fragile.

It's mostly paint in my experience. Japanese made saya are actually even thinner and lighter than most Chinese made saya in my experience. They oddly feel more sturdy. I'm not sure how to describe it, but they feel much less frail.

I compaired a nihonto scabbard and a Huawei one. The Chinese was huge. They have to be. Japanese scabbards are made around the blade. The Chinese make standard scabbards. One model will fit many blades of the same type. That means that the channel has to be very wide and the walls are too thick also.

Interesting read and yes it does help clear out a lot of the BS that goes as sales pitch over at EBay among the various vendors.
