Am I judging the 2nd round too? If so should I make up my own criteria again? think whoever is judging should set guidelines, but can we plllllleeeeeeeaaaaaassssseeee steer away from this whole make a x length y type knife, and more into make a knife between x and y length, because to me saying a fighter/camp style knife that must be able to chop through a piece of 4 x 2 means were making a cleaver or a big wide blade bowie or the like, cant really imagine something like a fairbairn sykes or a mk 1 trench knife being used to chop through a log or a 4x2, in the same way i couldn't see the afore mentioned being used in a camping hunting type of situation, as ive said all along give us some room to express our styles rather than just making a camping knife or a hunting knife or a dinner knife, lets go with 2 measurements and a requirement then let the imaginations run wild, that way we get variations rather than the same types of knife from everyone, the artistic should be just as big a factor as the functionality in my opinion

And it's hard to compare knives of different types. You can't really say your machete is better at being a machete than my paring knife is at peeling potatoes. That way, we all know what to play for. If we make a knife for chopping, you can specifically tune it to out-chop the other knives. You can still make whatever design you please. As long as it serves it's purpose.

Another thing I've been thinking about adding is a weight limit. But the problem I see with that is everyone might not have a scale, and it would be hard to decipher what a good knife for X purpose should weigh.

No to the weight limit, I think our judge will be able to tell if something is a over weight chunk on steel.

I want to go to one of my favorites next and do a large bowie, 12in blade min. Or maybe TomK a dagger so we can stabb somethings.

Who is the next knife shipped to the chopper/fighter. I'm getting confused now. Has anyone one even started on the next one and when is it due in.

Randomnobody graciously volunteered to be the judge of the first round knife. The first round knife was supposed to be a chopper or a fighter and morphed into a "chopper/fighter". The requirement is a cutting edge of 9 - 12 inches. The due date is Sept 20.

Thanks Digs, I've already got it finished like you've seen on facebook. Ever thought I would be using facebook, first time I ever have used it. Still don't like it, but that's just me. At least it real easy to post pictures there, wish it was that easy here.

I almost never get involved on Facebook, but the messenger is pretty good. In fact, the messenger is the only reason I even have a Facebook account. Years ago some friends wanted to move on from the aging IRC channel we'd all been in after the forum we met on shut down. Google hangouts, what's app, and several others failed to hold up, when Facebook introduced their messenger as a separate mobile app a friend made a Facebook page for me and sent me the login info simply saying "do this." That didn't last long before Telegram came along, and we haven't gone back. But, so many of my family members somehow found my page and I'm now obligated to it. Works nicely for this, though. Anywho, since I'll be playing judge on the next round, whenever you lot get finished just PM me and I'll get my shipping info and all to you. Still two and a half weeks to the "due date" so take your time.

Per the list in the initial post in this thread, we started with:
As far as I can tell, Chris should have knives from at least five people, maybe more? Not sure who, though. I think Wes, Driggers, Digs, SanMarc, Mike, and one or two others have knives out to Chris for the preliminary round.
As for the first "official" round, I've heard from SanMarc, who is in the finishing stages with "15 minutes left" at his last word to me, personally. I have Driggers' knife already (gave it a good fondling, too), I think Digs had to bow out because his knife cracked in heat treat and he didn't feel like he had enough time to do up another...I don't think I've heard from anybody else. I seem to recall freq bowed out a while back, can't recall if his buddy Ken was still in...
Come to think of it, I can't even remember if Tom confirmed whether he'd even be having a go this round; I want to say his classes and work schedule kept him out this time. I'm still not even sure who Jeffrey Burlison/balimund21 is at this point, I think I've seen him in the Facebook group chat?
Anyway, I do worry that this won't be seeing many more rounds. It's a shame, because it's a great idea, and sure to be a lot of fun, and even some good publicity when it comes right down to it. Seems like we just have a bad mix of hobbyists versus professionals, that is, those participating are either doing so in their free time, between working regular jobs, tending family affairs, and general "real life" stuff...and the others are guys who've turned blade making into a proper little business of its own, with real, paying commissions and other orders to attend, and this is just a little game they're playing when they can spare time.
Either way, whatever comes out of it will surely be great in quality if not quantity.
