Check out this pattern welded short sword I picked up on ebay from Pakistan. I got a good price on it when I made an offer and it was shipped quickly. It's by no means perfect - had a slight bend in it I was able to press out over my knee, a very slight twist- or maybe it's just not perfectly symmetrically beveled along each flat (hard to tell as it's so slight), but overall I really like this blade and I plan to have fun hilting it up some. The plan is to do some kind of sandwich layer / migration style-esque pommel and cross using brass and maple, with I don't know what kind of grip yet, and then eventually a scabbard. Stats from the auction are accurate. Overall Length :2800 Inches Handel Length : 6.00 Inches Blade Length : 22.00 Inches Blade Width : 1.75 Inches Blade Thickness : 5 mm The tang before I ground the shoulders back about 1/4" and squared the tang end. Going to be a short grip

pretty! I've had the idea (more than once) of asking for a damascus sword blade that hasn't been heat treated and have it reground and heat treated in the states. looks like it's going to be a cool project!

Lol this one is heat treated already, at least that's what the auction said. Don't believe a word about the heat treat until it's been tested

Awesome project Chris....can't wait to see more progress. So will your cross and pommel had that slight curve like the drawing? (think Gladius guard)

Pakistans idea of heat treat isnt the same as our idea of heat treat generally speaking.

Aussie- for the $60 I spent on the blade I don't think I'll be paying to have it tested lol. The edge skates a file pretty good and the blade has decent flex and return to form so that's good enough for me.
Bryan - not sure anymore if I'm going to round the inside edges of the pommel/guard. From one pic you can see I'm giving the guard a eye shape from top down but I haven't decided on the pommel or what other curves they're going to get.
Saito- yup! Heat treated Pakistan style is different lol. Like the hrc from the auction. .. I doubt it lol

Thanks! It's resting with a coat of stain now, after having suffered my first attempt at peening... which did not go exactly as planned. Couldn't keep the tang hot enough without the brass overheating, expanding and burning the wood, and deforming more easily than the tang.... . Next time I sue something better than propane. Heck, there'sa LOT I would do different next time lol! Ah well, it's still good to go for a grip core and so on. Photobucket is freezing though for me so pics soon

The stain I made to help hide some of the charred wood from the pommel getting burned worked well. Under wrap of synthetic sinew is down, just need to wrap leather tomorrow then sharpen.

She's wrapped and scabbard starts today, hope I can get it done all in one day! Not sure if I should leather wrap it this time, kind of feeling like just going bare wood on the outside but I only have poplar

That's awesome Chris! Really well executed all around. I am inspired to tackle that migration style organic hilt as well.....
Congrats!

I can't wait to sharpen it and try it out. The pob is 4.5" from the cross and it feels very lively to wield. I think I might clean up around the peen a bit as it looks very dark in the pics. I'll try etching the blade too.
