My first knife a pocket folder. The first blade I bought was a German bayonet. My father collected military automatics, so we were taken to a lot of gun shows and shops. The bayonet I picked when I was probably 8.

The latest from Derrick Bohn - Knives Ship Free - they've suspended the Knives for Kids program for the time being seeing as they've already hit 4,000. He stated they would open up the program in the near future, with some people already on the waiting list.

That was the first ACTUAL pocket knife I owned. My great grandpa gave it to me before he died. Man, that picture sure brought back memories... I remember being ULTRA-TURBO upset when I lost the tweasers out of it. You too huh? I ended up losing the tweezers and toothpick on a black one my grandpa gave me as kid and was pretty upset. Now... I have like 6 of them around the house and one in each car and keychain set. This is my favorite pocket knife next to the tiny leatherman pliers.

At 75 I can’t remember my first knife other than it was a folder with horn scales. It seems like I always had a knife. Presently I carry two. All of us kids had at least a folder and did everything with them from cutting wire to playing Mumblety peg. Thinking back on it I think most were so abused that they wouldn’t cut soft butter. It was a way of life and nobody thought twice about it. Now I see kids in the US arrested for just having a pocket knife in the glove compartment of their car. Not to mention trying to board a commercial airplane. I liked the old days better.

I hate scammers of all kinds. I can understand why some people would want to scam others, but nontheless, it really gets my goat to see it happen, especially when someone is trying to do something good for others. Derrick Bohn (Kinves Ship Free) had some problems with scammers, and sent out an email about it. He has this to say:
"In the first 3 days [of the Knives for Kids program], we gave away almost 4000 knives. 3000 more knives than I planned and had in stock. I called my Buck rep and bought 3000 more so I could send them out to parents to give to their kids as we had promised.
On Sunday, I printed a bunch of orders so I could start engraving and get the knives out as soon as possible. My daughter Elizabeth and I engraved and packed all day long and into the night.
It wasn't until Monday I realized (I know, I am kind of slow) there were people who were just blatantly taking advantage of our offer. Some were obviously ordering for themselves. Some ordered large quantities--20, 30, even 50 knives.
Those were on top of the hundreds and hundreds of good people (like you) who caught the vision for what we were doing and ordered knives for their kids. Some ordered one. Some two. Some three. We had grandparents who wanted to bless their grandkids. They carefully listed out each grandkid -- one of them totaled over 20.
We poured over and over the list of orders. We cancelled the orders from people who were obviously just grabbing for something free--those were easy. But there are a lot of orders that are not easy to figure out what is real, what is fraudulent, and what is just beyond the scope of what we can do."
He has promissed to open up the program again in the future, but will ask for a small donation for the knife instead of giving it away for free. I sincerely hope that the scammers were all weeded out and that this doesn't happen again. Unfortunately, I know there are always going to be scammers out there much to the detriment of all.

What a bunch of a-holes. I figured something like that may happen, but it still sucks to see that it did.

Ooh, those look good. Buck Bantam, eh? I keep forgetting about that one. Not my style, personally, but really nice looking knives nonetheless. Can't beat the price, either. This is me not being that creepy guy who asks about seeing pictures of the girls with their new knives, because that would be weird. That said, I'll have to look up how big that knife is and determine for myself how well it fits the average kid's hand; probably about a 3-3.5" blade, so 4-4.5" handle? Should be dandy. Anyway, cool. This is a great program, I hope it got all its issues sorted out and can go on to be something really good.

I got one (also a Buck Bantam) for my daughter a few weeks ago - still haven't given it to her since I don't think she's ready for a real knife. A few months from now though and she'll get to use it. Oh, and while I was looking though some catalogs of mine, my daughter squealed when she saw a Kershaw Leek with all the funky coloring on them, saying "Leek! Leek! Leek!" I think she's going to like her Buck when she gets it seing how excited she got looking through the catalog

Now she'll be disappointed that it isn't a Leek.

My girls are too young right now as well. Especially the 6 month old! But I figured if one has their own the other will want one too eventually.

Now she'll be disappointed that it isn't a Leek. LOL! I think she'll like the Buck... if not, I'll figure out a way to color the scales pink and that'll assure that she loves it.

The ones I ordered for my kids came last week. I will probably let my oldest use hers under heavy supervision this summer when we are camping. The other two will be waiting until younger kids get older.
