I've been looking at a bunch, but can't make up my mind. Anyone have any suggestions? I can spend up to $300

I've been liking my Windless XIV quite a bit, at least for the money. The leather wrap isn't too good but can be replaced. It's slightly heavy but you get used to it, and it can be used in I.33 rotation drills really easily. I have a higher end arming sword--one of the nicer A-trim's. But frankly I'm a little frightened of it. Drilling with it is very close to the feeling of getting in a high performance racing car and realizing you're not ready for that kind of power!

Thanks Fellas. And as far as power goes, I can handle a heavy single-handed sword.

I'll second this; redoing the grip is almost a must, though, since the standard grip is pretty narrow and can get uncomfortable after awhile (I still need to redo mine).

I got the first gen of this one. A great one hand cutter for sure. I heard they lightened them up some in subsequent runs.

I hate Mt.Dew, Dave. I got those from the recycle bin at work. I like the way they cut. I dislike most yellow sodas.

Dave, there are going on five thousand people working at my company and the company is a big believer in recycling, hence recycle bins everywhere. An unlimited supply of plastic bottles of all types. Mt. Dew is by far the most popular drink among the people of southern Indiana.

Yeah, but if he wants a taste of real medieval arming swords, this one is a lot closer that something heavy and overbuilt.

Yeah, but if he wants a taste of real medieval arming swords, this one is a lot closer that something heavy and overbuilt. ;) They must have really lightened up the VA. Mine is a more substantial sword in hand that my H/T. Still at two pounds the newer VA would be in the average weight arming sword category, as Mike points out. Tho at a hundred dollars cheaper, it's hard not to go with the H/T as it's a good sword in it's own right, barring the skinny grip which don't bother me with my girly hands. Choices, choices...

I would like to have the HT as well. I just think that for a first medieval taste, the VA offers the benefits of being cutter-ready out of the box, not having to rework the edge and not having to rework the grip for Germanic's big German hands.
Heck, if I was Germanic I'd probably call Sonny and ask him if he has any seconds of the AT303S that he'd let go cheaper. Tell him about being a regular poster of cutting videos on SBG and how I want a taste of medieval arming swords, and maybe he'd make an accommodation? I think it'd at least be worth a call...

I do find my VA a better cutter than my H/T but I probably should stay out of it since the newer ones are different.

I have been hearing that the hanwei tinkers being shipped lately have been showing up with much better edges than before in fact I have heard several people say theirs didn't need any sharpening out of the box and the edge had no secondary at all.
I am pretty sure the VA will be sharper since Sonny touches them all up himself, but you pay for that better QC. as it should be I'd say.
I don't know what the current line of VA 303 is like but Afte the first generation they had two generations that were really just about perfect being a lot lighter than he first but still substantial then after that they just got lighter and lighter until they seemed to lack any presence at all. I saw a few that were just too light and thin. Like I said, I have no idea what they are like now but they have been all over the road. Ask around and see who has one from a recent batch and ask how it feels.
