Personally, I like the folded 1085/T10 better than the folded T10. RinC

One of the things that surprised me about this sword was how subtle the folding was. Only really see it in the hamon (which us a bit weird, but common in this market) and the kissaki. I hate the garish "hada" most Chinese kats have, this is a step in the right direction.

What a fantastic review. As some of you know, I've been indisposed and I'm not going to be able to go into one of my usual elaborate, eloquent, overblown responses... at least not yet. Consider yourselves off the hook this time. Robert I want to congratulate you on your contribution, on the sword, and on the beautiful photos. What a treasure! I'm so pleased you'll be able to enjoy it for years to come.

Where the subtle hada is most easily seen is in that close up pic of the kissaki. The polish on this sword is nice but kind of obscures the hada/folded 1085/T10 steel elsewhere. My $199 Huawei waki is also folded 1085/T10 but has a rougher polish that obscures all but the most loose folds. I am growing increasingly tempted to fingerstone polish perhaps on side of the waki blade. (the waki instead of the katana since the katana blade polish is a better grade of polish.... ....and just as I favor Arts-Feng cameras (less money), I would favor polishing the waki (shorter length = less to polish).
I do not have a folded T10 Huawei, but at least in the Huawei site pics, it looks to me like the Huawei folded 1085/T10 has finer folds and the Huawei folded T10 has looser folds (that is one can see the folds more far away on the folded T10 blades and has to get closer to see the folds on the folded 1085/T10 blades.
To me, folded steel (with proper polish) gives me more stuff to look at. Mono steel has what? mono steel and a hamon. Less eye candy.
I would like to see Huawei do some blades in folded 1085/T10 like their recent $429/$479/$499 fancy choji-full temper blades that are now only offered in mono T10.
Hi Atrixnet, thanks....go get better and become less indisposed. Your FeiLong and Lion Dog katanas are calling you.

(p.s. Not to stir up trouble, me being the consummate peace-maker of SBG, but did you know that Josh secretly loves Arts-Feng sword furniture?)
Got to go now. My 'So you wannabe a Buddhist Priest" class is starting. Today's meditation is upon the "Sound of Two Hands Clapping". (teacher in the One Hands class kicked me out....I kept saying that I did not hear anything and he kept telling me to shut up.)

p.p.s. If I polish just one side of my waki, I can name it "Two Face" (any Batman villain fans here?)/

RNBody: "Yeah, I'm thinking to have Huawei "reproduce" my old naoshi, just because. Mostly to see if they could, mind you I have little doubt. As for bedside blades, I have too many of those already. On my headboard alone I have something like nine knives, plus I keep another one (which normally lives in my pocket) beside me on the mattress when I sleep. Add to that three swords resting on the wall beside my headboard, plus 13 in my recliner (one of which doesn't really count as it's kept in a bag) although six of those are antiques. No shortage of "bedside blades" for me. I think if I really wanted to scare somebody away I'd use either my big old Khyber or my big kukri...wakizashi would just be something pretty to look at. ;) Either way, should I ever return to "production" swords, Huawei is first on the list. 8-)" -------------------------- RNBody: Well, you got me beat. I normally only have a katana, a waki and several knives by my bedside. (just to admire of course (cough).... As for antique nihonto wakizashi's....they seem definitely more affordable on Ebay than nihonto katanas...although the price range varies from $5k to about $300...I do notice the average is about $1,500 for decent stuff from Japan. But a lot in the $700 plus or minus range. The disturbing thing I observe is the lack of buying interest in nihonto waki's. So many of the nihonto waki Ebay listings expire with zero offers. I was thinking of posting my nihonto waki (mumei, ok narrow hamon blade with a mix of WWII and modern furniture) on Ebay with a reserve of $350 and free shipping within the USA...not sure it would be worth the effort though. On Ebay, I have seen nicer waki's than mine not get any bids for even that price range. Waki market seems dead. RinC (in other news, am still awaiting on my Huawei "medium to hard target" katana order from last December. Happily I have not put any money down, so if no signs of life in a month or two, I could cancel the order and look else where if I wanted.)

Most collectors go for katana, for obvious reasons, but I personally prefer the variety available in wakizashi. Tanto, for some reason, can get just as expensive as katana. I'm watching several auctions right now between $600-2,000, but unfortunately have only about $5 to offer anybody. eBay is an odd market, I've been following some auctions for months now, and some have sprung up as only three-day listings and sold for hundreds more than I could have justified. Dealer sites tend to have better inventory, but dealer prices keep them around longer. Just found out a pesh kabz I'd been lusting over at Shastar Dhari had sold, the $635 asking price was a touch more than I felt it worth, but obviously somebody disagreed. Anyway, odd timing on the reply aside, good luck on that new sword.
