Proof of the old maxim "momma ain't happy, nobody's happy!" You are a very brave man to sacrifice the cutting board prior to spousal approval. The proper response would be "honey, I thought you needed a new cutting board!".

These sort of failures can happen even with the best craftsmen. Sometimes there's a flaw in the steel from the foundry.
In this case it sure looked like lack of normalization before hardening. Was it? No idea.
When dealing with a company that mass produces more slip ups will happen than you get with more custom one at a time makers and Chinese forges are notorious for letting bad ones slip through. The best thing you can do when buying Chinese production blades is purchase from a seller that takes care of the problems when they arise. reputation, in this case, is king
