Interesting looking wrap Josh, I always like the less common tsukamaki methods. How secure is the Akechi katate-maki compared to the more common wrapping styles in your opinion?

Thank you very much Blackthorn, this feels very solid to me and surprisingly comfortable as well. I might actually be doing this style on my Huawei suguha custom (one day) -Josh

It looks beautiful Josh! Do you fine that this style maki comes loose? I have never handled one myself and I often wondered about it.

Thanks Josh, I have a tsuka to wrap, I'm trying to decide on the style. Like Matthew, I'm weighing up how durable it might be. Would you recommend doing this wrap with a decent grade cotton ito?

Thanks Matthew How durable the wrap is depends more on the materials and technique than the style but in general, I would say with the way I did this one, it should hold up just fine. I think Randy did one like this. -Josh

I also wonder how well that style would stand up to rigorous training. And how comfy it is. Do you feel the same nodes in between the wrap? That is also interesting how you have a cutout for the peg.

If you use cotton, which should be fine, you should pre-stretch it and make sure you keep tension on while wrapping and I would even give it a lacquer soak as well. In my experience, cotton stretches the most after wrapping than any other ito material. -Josh

Basically, I can't even budge the ito a millimeter with my fingers. To me, it feels very comfortable and I don't feel the samegawa. Beofre I did the tsukamaki I polished the skin and gave it many coats of lacquer so the nodes aren't sharp. The bits near the mekugi-ana are epoxied, including the exposed edges, so they should stay put. -Josh

Very nicely made, great to see those diamond shaped menuki. I would have chosen a tad different color but I think blue looks good too.
