I spent an inordinate amount of time playing Diablo 2 both as a teenager and while in college...best and most addictive game I ever played. Masterpiece.
I loved pwning people in duels with my Hdin. My favorite paladin build was what I called a Freezealot - I just maxed out Freeze aura and Zealot for rapid fire attack with insane cold damage and screen-wide slo-mo area effect. Made all those accursed little fleeing runts with blowguns or fireballs so much more tolerable. :D That sounds like pure PvM ownage. I hated those blowgun bastards!!
I went more the PvP route. My setup didn't have the special items that elite Hdins had, but I use Wizspike, Arach mesh, 2X FCR rings, Trangs Gloves, Some Runeword shield I forget, and some circlet I forget about. Anywho, I learned that cast rate and hit recovery frame rates were based on certain percentages, and I just used cheap gear to get those percentages in an unconventional way, and I just remember how pissed people got who were ebaying to get their gear.
I also had a Doom Axe and used charge against bowzons with their fast running, I would slow them down with the Doom freeze and the Trangs gloves, they got so pissed!
Ahhh, it's been 6 years and I still remember this sh*t. Good times. I wouldn't trade those memories for anything.

Yeah, I pretty much always went for builds that didn't depend on specific items. I think Mr. Freezealot was doing several thousand damage per hit with his bare hands long before the level cap - I actually had a lot of fun showing off by bareknuckle boxing my way through Hell. Of course, the occasional cold immune miniboss always stopped him cold. Pun intended.

Diablo I is awesome. Once you beat it, you can play through again with your character leveled up and equipped as it was when you beat Diablo.
