Hello,
I 've had my Lutel 16th century longsword and Windlass "sword-hilted" dagger for almost 10 years. They have served me well but the leather sheaths that came with them were getting pretty worn out. Years of reenacting and costume wear had taken their toll, so I decided to get some new tack for the old war horses. I was going for a simple soldier's type of scabbard, something similar to what they first came with, so I went with Crusader Monk who has a reputation for producing items like that at reasonable prices. I asked for plain leather and antiqued fittings, and this is what I got:
The sword fit to scabbard is PERFECT. The blade has no wiggle at all when sheathed, and is held in very securely. The cross fits flush with the leather seal at the mouth and the sword tip does not move inside the scabbard at all. The dagger fit to scabbard is good, but not perfect. There is a small sliver of bare blade showing at the cross and the tip bounces around in there a bit. I have been advised to stuff some cotton or wool down it to solve that problem.
JE Sarge did a pretty good job of duplicating the 3-point suspension the Lutel originally came with. The sword belt is made of a very stiff leather and supports the weapon's weight well. The smaller straps are made of a thinner, yet still very tough leather. The only complaint I had is that the foremost strap right by the main belt buckle should slant and left at an angle, rather than straight down as it is made. This would cause the sword to hang more naturally without creating a wrinkle in the belt. Sarge was receptive to this feedback and offered to send me a slanted replacement strap with a future order. This is a minor criticism; I like the rest of the rig just fine.
The Lutel originally came with a plain leather grip, while the Windlass dagger had a cheap stainless wire wrap. The replacement grip wraps are excellent, I have no complaints whatsoever. When I took the out of the shipping box I was impressed at how much more traction I got on these new grips. I believe the ridges are made by cord-wrapping the leather and then removing the cord. The glued seams are almost flush with the surface and barely noticeable. Sarge did a great job on these.
So all in all I am pretty pleased with this work, it is a good value for the money. JE Sarge at Crusader Monk is responsive over email, works to accomodate customer requests and best of all, turns products around very QUICKLY. Total working time was about 5 days + 2 days shipping. Would definitely buy again.
