So the SBG guides buyers on where to buy swords, but how about the dress of the warrior? Where are the good places to go to get clothing for the dojo without getting taken to the cleaners (pun intended)? Maybe while I'm asking this question it would also be a good time to also ask what clothing is commonly required or even good to have around?

Since you're soon to embark down the path of a classical Japanese sword school with an accredited Sensei I would strongly recommend holding off on purchasing any clothing or equipment whatsoever until you're told to. Furthermore, they'll make recommendations on where to purchase them from. They may not be the absolute cheapest available but far more importantly they'll be the right things for the group you're in. Think of it as joining a team, a team that has been around for 500 years. It's more important to match and be a part of the team than it is to save $10-$20 dollars...

Those that come to first class equipped with high-end sword, fancy gi and all kinds of stuff are usually the first to quit. First join a dojo, then buy what sensei will tell you. Don't rush into things.

If a hakama is what I'm understanding it to be (the black pant/skirt type thing) I've got one that I'd be willing to let go of. Has a belt thingy with it, too. Sorry for sounding so ignorant. It came with another purchase and I don't have a use for it. Also have some sandal things. Don't know what they are called, though.

I'll cancel my order on amazon for the gold thread uniform and sunglasses. (Just kidding of course). Point taken.

Hehe you laugh, but someone actually came with a red gi and hakama to one of our classes... Most places will kick you out for this kind of getup

e-bogu is great for starting gear. You can shop around for more formal stuff but basic gi, obi and hakama will be more than sufficient to get you going.
If someone kicks you out for showing up in weird clothing without knowing any better, I'd consider it a blessing for saving you time. It's one thing to take you aside, or even ask you to go back to street clothes. Don't get me wrong, they are perfectly within their rights to just NOPE you right out the door, but it's a semprini move, justified or not.

Wow. That sounds like costume party gear. Did he come in and sit next to Iron Man and Harry Potter?

Yeah, it would seem like a jerk move to punish someone for something when they didn't know better. But dang. Red?

Most dojos reserve the black hakama for those ranked Shodan and above... they have other color combos depending on the dojo. My Iaido dojo had us wear a blue Iaidogi and blue hakama until Shodan-ho, then black starting with Shodan - the Iadogi was left up to us as long as it was blue, black, or white. In my Aikido dojo, students are allowed to wear a black hakama only after they've reached Shodan. Just make sure to follow your school's dress code - don't show up with a Red, White, and Blue w/white stars outfit.

What A. said!
(or for comic relief...show up in a Sensei's outfit and then in a loud voice, ask one of the students how to tie the obi. :-) (and yes, wear something so multi colored, everyone needs shades just to look at it. And what about flashing LED lights on the outfit. Sorry all, just couldn't help myself...will be good the rest of the evening. :-) )

No, no, no I think you're on the right track with the LED's, RinC. You're on a roll. Keep going with this and I'm sure we'll get something fabulous. I was thinking we add a small sound system that plays the theme song from Rocky when I start to move rapidly or when things get too quiet.
