Thanks again for your input guys. I cut a broken tsuka I had to 9" as per your suggestions and put it on the nakago to try and get a feel for the length and I agree with you that this feels right. With the fittings, this will be around 9 3/4" total tsuka length. With my hands and grip position, this puts the kashira right at the end of my left palm with a two-hand grip and doesn't feel awkwardly long with a one-hand grip.
Thanks!

That sounds great. Will you do a mini review once you've completed it? I'd like to hear your thoughts about handling characteristics.

And a contest to win it? (Ok. I'm outta here.) More seriously, I'm as curious as LG. And I will be glad to see your new baby, Josh

I have a windglider hira zukuri ko katana, It came with a busted tsuka, Im in the middle of a making a new 10 inch tsuka for it. Considering its extreme lightness I think 10 is perfect for it.

Thanks for the input, Novice Surgery! So a 9"/10" tsuka definitely seems to be the right choice.

me. i cut down a raptor blade 21 inches, used the o-kisakui tip as a kwaiken(work in rogress), so it has a raptors handle and a shorter "bujinkan" cheness blad and a 14 inch tsuka. i call it my corridor fighter heh. its awesome. this kisaki is crap beause all i had was a hacksaw. needs to be sshobu forum. i really like it and the 8 inch kwaiken is gonna be great. trustme about 14 inches being awesome this this is a beast lol.

I have the unokubi zukuri ko katana in hand so I can offer better data on this topic now. The sword has a 9.5 inch tsuka with a 23 inch nagasa. This thing is faast guys, the tsuka can definately fit both my hands, but its not optimal for using the "one hand at top of tsuka one hand at bottom" grip. I feel as though Id want another half inch on the tsuka to use that grip more comfortably. I find it swings best with a one handed grip. Much easier to get proper tachikaze with a one handed swing. I do use a couple different gripping techniques including both hands together on the tsuka "hands not spread apart" and with this grip the tsuka length is pretty perfect as well. It feels like a ko katana in handling with a taste of wakizachi flavor still in there. Hope this could help someone. Mini review of the sword on the way as requested. : )

Is this the measurement of the wrapped portion or the tsuka including fittings? Are the end knots on the correct sides on this tsuka?

Its 9.5 inches fittings included, there are no end knots tied because the seller I got it from did a simple spiral wrap in leather then glued it on. The kashira is epoxied on the tsuka. It has a hanwei practical wakizachi tsuba.
