Introduction
I've used throwing axes, -knives and "-stars" before and I wanted to test new throwing thingies. I've learned to throw knitting needles before and I thought these would work in the same way, but of course better.
Historical overview (wikipedia)
Initial Impressions
At first sight these look really good! They feel well balanced and quality seems great. "Sheath" feels cheap and impractical. One of the shurikens is damaged. The tip is bent ( luckily less than 1mm). Overall package is good.
Statistics
Blade Length: 8,5 cm
Handle Length: 8 cm
Overall Length: 16,5 cm
POB: in the middle
Weight: I don't have a weighing scale...
Blade & Handle
Blade is heavy and octagonal. Tip is sharp but quickly thickens. Material is unspecified blackened carbon steel. These are pretty thin where the blade meets the handle. Handle is steel wire wrapped (glued and painted) around the blade steel so construction is really sturdy. Construction sounds crude but these are actually quite elegant little throwers. I've used these a lot and they have endured remarkably well in the hands of an amateur thrower like me. One of them did bent a little though.
Sheath
It's useless because the shurikens will fall off easily and the sharp points are sticking out all the time. So it doesn't even pass as a sheath actually...
Throwing
(I've never thrown shuriken before so please share your knowledge of the throwing technique.)
I tried throwing these like darts and like throwing knives (rotary). Throwing felt natural and hitting the target was easy. I suppose these are meant to be thrown like darts? But I couldn't get good penetration like that and the shurikens didn't stick to the target. It was a little bit difficult to make them fly straight, (but my experiments with throwing knitting needles was a great help. ) With rotary throwing style the penetration was better and they did stuck to the target, but of course the impact angle must be perfect.
Conclusions
I think this shuriken set is good. Maybe a little bit overpriced, but quality is good so I quess it's OK. I should know how to use these properly before I can say anything definitive. They work really well how I use them and they fit great to my needs. I don't understand the quickly thickening tip design because it weakens the penetration capability. I believe there is a good reason for the design. I suppose these are meant to be used like a dagger as well and the tip design works well when stabbing.
Pros
- Great overall quality
- Simple but elegant
- Good balance
Cons
- Sheath is impractical
- Tip of one shuriken was damaged
- Shuriken might bend because the thinnest part is maybe too thin...
The Bottom Line
As far as I understand these are good shurikens. If anyone wants to try shurikens, I think these are a great option. Overall quality is great and these are durable and functional even in the hands of an amateur.
Thanks.
