Hanwei Raptor Nambokucho Zukuri review
This review is for the members and guests to read and comment on and is in now way on behalf of any manufacture or retailer.
I punchiest the katana from Oriental Weaponry in the uk for a reduced price of £176.00, it was sold as imperfect as the blade had some surface rust, from some research it appears that in some way the timber for the saya not being dried out caused this. The rust was removed with a hybrid polish with some WD40 1000 grit wet and dry in 20 minutes and as you see from the photo it has come up fine with no staining or pitting.
The katana is a large but nimble sword the blade being 30 inches long but not over thick at the habaki and tapering out to the kissaki and weights in at 3 pounds.
The kissaki is an O-kissaki and on this sword there’s a bit of kideology going on. There is a slight ridge where the yokote would be and then the kissaki is brushed, it gives the appearance of a geometric kissaki but it’s not but , look good all the same!
The blade steel is 5160 spring steel differentially hardened with no hamon and that’s it for the blade it’s plane very sharp and very usable, say no more.
The tsuka is long at 13 ½ inches very tight and well wrapped with black doe skin like leather in the battle wrap style with the menuki on top of the ito wrap, this dose not make the tsuka uncomfortable to hold in fact I would say it increases the feel of the sword.
The tsuba and fittings are all black cast iron with good detail in the bird of pray theme and this plain black look adds to the utilitarian look of the katana.
The saya has a fake ray skin like covering with a plastic kojiri. This is not a problem, this is not a display sword it is a sword made to be used and I must say it can be used with ease. Having said that when it is on the sword stand it looks great and has nice sweeping lines and everything in propitiation.
To sum up, (about time you say) this is a very well made and good quality sword. It is easy to use and looks good on the stand. There are some rust issues but this can be controlled without any problem. Well worth the £176.00 in fact worth £276.00.
Any body else who has owns one I would like some feed back as to their thoughts.
That’s all folks.
