With a tape measure from ridge to ridge, both swords look to have an estimated 3/8 inch thickness at the base.

Thanks mate. About what I'd expected. Looks like Chennesfan is on the money with his 8mm stock - re the blade he's making now. Also for hollow grinding, they need a pretty thick base stock or they can be quite whippy. Cheers

beautiful sword Bill, and lovely pictures. thanks for giving us this view of it. to me, and I may be wrong about this, it looks like the black you saw on the grip was caused by a slight over-application of glue. basically if you put a little too much glue on when you wrap the grip with the cord over the top the glue gets drawn through the leather and stains it a dark or even black color. this can be hard to even see until you dye the leather. it is unfortunate of such a high dollar sword but I don't think it would bother me. many makers, myself included, will sometimes do that on purpose to get black undertones to the whole grip.
might be something else but that is what it looks like to me.

Thanks Tom - makes perfect sense. Not really a deal breaker for me. I got a Templar a few years ago in oxblood that had large patches where the dye did not take. Grip looks like a campaign oxblood.
