Wow that is a lot of info, thanks Uhlan. I am still not sure about the scabbard being the original for the sword. The mouthpiece and retaining springs suggest a single edge sword. Here are some better pics of it. I will have a look for that book ! Cheers !

First guess is that you have an M1854 / 82 scabbard, but the M1923 scabbard comes close too qua gird. The right scabbard for your sabre should still have the two rings as the sabre dates from before 1880 - 82 and had left the service before the one ring system came into effect, but it should indeed have a mouth piece with a symmetrical entree independent of the carry system du jour. What are you going to do? Try get some money back?
