This is so strange to me telling a young man not to carry a knife. When I was growing up I was carrying a pocket knife at 10 years old. A larger folding lock blade at 13 years old we even carried them to school in leather puoches on our belts. The most a teacher would say is can I use your knife to do something. Yes we had fantasties about defence with a knife true come out you all did.
If your father ahs no problem with you carrying a knife that's what counts. But I would go with a smaller drop point style knife for every day carry. A drop point is a great do everything design.

I recommend browsing the Becker line from kabar (Tomars Kabars is a good site to do this). Great knives with a great warranty and they won't break the bank. Comfortable handles. Don't overspend. You should find a becker that suits your needs. They are also great for customizing.

Back to the original question: How about a Blackjack model 14 ? It's a copy of the famous Randall 14 with an improvement. The Randall has a grip with the top open and the other three sides epoxied to the tang. The Blackjack has the same general construction with the benefit of two large rivets/pins to hold the handle. The next difference is the sheathes. The Randall sports an integral sharpening stone pocket with a stone. The Blackjack doesn't have a stone pocket but, the sheath is designed so you can keep the snap strap held upright and out of the way. The sheath is tight enough to hold the knife without the snap in an inverted position. The next and final reason to go with the Blackjack is the price. You can purchase a Blackjack for less than 1/2 the price of a Randall. The top knife is a 14 model Border Patrol, the bottom knife with the finger cutouts is a Halo 14. They both have a 7" blade. I don't currently own a Randall 14. I did purchase one in 74 and kept it for about 18 years. I now own the two Blackjack 14's pictured above. The only thing I liked better about the Randall was the stone and pocket. I always carry a stone in my car for edge touch ups on my pocket knife although I never have used it. I have always waited till I got home to use a bigger/better stone.

I've owned big camp knives my whole life from kabar's and ontario's to Randall's and customs. I have a large custom chopper on order from battle horse knives( blind horse knives) along with another bushcraft knife. But I feel some of the best camp/combat knives are the kabar Becker knives. Like the BK7 and Bk9. You can pretty it up with some micarta grips and maybe a kydex sheath or remove the black finish. Just piggie back a Bk11 or BK14 to the sheath and your set.
