UPDATE:
Huawei has agreed to send me a new bare blade, and has also allowed me to keep the old one. Should be here in about a week. Very pleased with how smooth this went. Huawei definitely has my vote.

That is good news. The current blade would make for a nice project but I wouldn't suggest using it for anything over tanto size just in case.

I'm glad noone was hurt! If the break was above the top mekugi, it could've been really bad! Does anyone notice that near the edge side, there is a small amount of darkened steel, like it's got a hamon all the way down or something. I thought it was just the lighting, but you can see it on both broken pieces. Weird. Cody

I'm very glad you put up pics of the break as it reassured me of the quality of these blades. That's a material flaw and isn't all too common but easily over looked. As a machinist, I am quite aware of the random variable in most heat treating/tempering. honestly the tool marks suggest that the tang had been ground with a circular hand grinder of which produces heat, that would in fact expose, and amplify, any minute imperfection. granted this being 9260, its an unlikely event due to process of tempering. From the porous texture within the break you can probably say it was just concentration of impurity. Considering price of blade, this can pop up I'm sure as they most likely do care but are most likely inclined to being pushed towards making the next blade. Very pleased Jacky hooked you up with bare blade, please keep up if the new bare also fails {i doubt that} if you were to ask me your a lucky guy to have found one with a flaw as it is probably a shock to even the vendor, also for having such an awesome mother. I've seen destruction, and have in fact handled a spring blade and they are so rugged, you'd have to ask it to break, even then it may not answer your demand lol. Please correct me if I'm wrong. I'm getting one for myself.... ill share the experience.
-very glad you followed through, this is exactly what i was looking to find. Also sounds as if he was in disbelief of the break, and after realizing felt the need to replace.

Bushido-blade- I was informed by a bladesmith that another reason it broke was a small crack that had existed in the tang for a while. Granted it's properly tempered I'm sure this sword will be quite formidable. It's a good choice to pick it up. The new bare blade arrived recently, and it appears to be all good. It has quite a bit of flex to it. Once I get it all secured and ready to go, I'll update on how it cuts. By the way, welcome to the forum! Good to see more sword enthusiasts joining up!

Thanks, ill be popping in and out for years to come. I also noticed that.... if you look you'll see a fine line that nearly matches up.... almost being perfectly invisible if lined back up but then there's a wave like crack after... this suggests the hairline crack was present and stress made the other ugly one form. Probably a crack but even grain structure could present this flaw. like as if the structure never adhered to its self inside right there. Still haven't bought one but only because of money failing to arrive :/

Thank you for this review, Sugi. Do you or anyone else have anything to add to this? I was wanting to buy a 9260 Musashi Katana from Huawei, but this review has me second guessing now. It would be my first katana and I would use it for messing around in the backyard and cutting pool noodles etc. And of course for the coming zombie apocalypse. But yeah, I don't want to spend $142 and have it break at the tang. Does anyone know if the quality control has improved since this incident? I really want a tough katana that doesn't break the bank. 9260 seems like a good steel. I have a Kukri in 5160 that is tough as nails - which is similar to 9260 I think. Thanks guys

The base 9260 is probably one of Huawei's most popular swords, and this is the only unintentional break I've heard of w/these blades. I have a Huawei 9260 mat cutter (lighter version of these blades), and blunted one of the standard 9260's for use as iaito after it was used as a cutter; no probs w/those so far... If you're interested in another tough 5160 option, check out the SBG sale on Hanwei Raptor 2nds, a bit more @ $200. ymmv, hth!
