jason, ok- sounds great I'll be in touch. Your work looks great. www.cottontailcustoms.com/ does not seem to work. I'd be interested in seeing it.

I'm not really taking any new work now so I let my website shut down but most of my work can be seen on fb and on the forums. If you want good leather tsukamaki done, Jason is the man to work with. Take a look at the work he's done on his Kill Bill replicas. From 1:23 The leather ito won't be going anywhere so just let me know when you decide

Holy toledo steel
Thats great!
Hey Frank or Jason, either of you guys into or like Kendo? After I told my friend of my interest in Japanese swords, he got me the Geoff Salmon book for Christmas, confusing it with iaido.

We do a bit of iaito at the dojo (mixed in with Aikido), but not Kendo. We do train with the shinai on occasion (easier on your partner if you happen to hit:))
Thanks, jason

The wak arrived today.
My first impressions, everything is solid, nothing loose, and the wrap is very tight despite the pics. But it needs to be rewrapped.
My concerns are that only the kissaki was sharpened. The further down the blade you go you get closer to butterknife terrirtory.
Frank Bunny, let me know what you want for the ito you mentioned. I will paypal it to you in a couple weeks.
And Jason, if you still want to rewrap it for me, let me know when you will be in Ogdensburg anytime after mid Feb, I should have the ito by then.
I will do a real review when I have more time to take pics.

thanks, frank!
from the tsuba to the the end to the kashira is 8 1/2 inches
But I think I may have bigger problems than the tsuba. I was looking down onto he mune as I held the wak in front of me. I noticed it was slightly curved or bent to the left. So, thinking of the Ryan sword videos of them stepping on their blades to show their springyness, I wrapped a towel around the blade, and laid it on its side on a stable surface, and applied moderate pressure with one hand. The blade bent some and sprang back. But when checking the mune again I could see that it was bent the other direction from what I just did. It did not spring back 100%.
Is this normal? I thought these blades were supposed to keep their shape. I did not apply a lot of pressure.

For a good blade,no its not normal. For a Ryan sword, its not surprising. The blade is soft, bad HT. Maybe its not too late to return it for a refund and go elsewhere.I sure as hell would try. Sorry.

Sigh. What really stinks is that this was an unusual purchase for me, having limited resources. Plus being my first sword of any kind makes it all disappointing. Not sure if I should bother to rewrap the tsuka.
I have emailed them about the problem. I guess we will have to see what happens.

I'm also thinking it shouldn't have been that easy to bend the blade the other way. I have bent full length blades that are dh and I needed a good amount of pressure to do it. I am not a fan of Ryan swords and things like this are why. I hope you find resolution.

Wow - that's bad luck! I'm still in for the re-wrap, if you'd still like it done.
Thanks, jason

Thank so much Jason
I really do not see the point with this sword. However, I am back in the market and if I find something that for which I may want a different ito, I will be in touch.

For ebay I would stick to Huawei or St.Nihonto. Whitefeathers has a Hanwei Practical wakizashi for sale in the classifieds thats a very good deal. Glad they are refunding your money.Run away from Ryan now as fast as you can.His stuff is crap!

I can suggest looking into Huawei Sword. I have purchased a few swords from them, two custom made, and was very happy. If going custom, keeping the instructions simple seems to work best. In my opinion, they are producing the best blades for the money currently. You could also save up and wait to buy a Hanwei or Dynasty Forge. I think there is a Hanwei wakizashi in the classifieds now. Edit, John has beat me to it, lol

OK folks this thread is a great example of why Ryan Sword has the reputation it does. Horrible tsukamaki, bent blade, unsharpened blade, etc. For $300 none of these issues should have left the shop and been shipped out to the customer.
AmishBob, I am sorry you had a first sword experience like this but at least this has given others who might consider taking a risk on Ryansword a good look at why they have a bad reputation in the sword community.
All you new to swords people who are considering Ryanswords, please learn from this experience. AmishBob had heard the negatives about Ryansword but thought he would take the chance on them having improved over the years. He got suckered by the misinformation of the owner, and was sent a horrible example of a sword, but one that sadly is way too typical of Ryansword.
People please don't think that Ryansword has improved, or you might end up with a similar experience. There is a very good reason Ryansword has such a bad reputation in the sword community, not just on SBG but other sites too. It is well deserved and this thread is a perfect example of it.
If there were not many sword makers and vendors, it might be understandable to take a risk now and then. However there are plenty of options when looking at Japanese styled swords. There are plenty of reputable vendors and sword makers that you don't need to risk wasting your money and time and excitement on a Ryansword.
