It's starting to look that way here, too. Antiques (when found cheap) aren't much more than production pieces, and are certainly far more valuable, and only get more so as they age. Half the reason I'm thinking of taking the plunge, myself.
I did get a response, by the way, from Valiant Co. Nothing on prices, but they expect to have most of their inventory (including their Dha) re-stocked early next year. I'll be keeping an eye out, as I certainly want their dha, but in the meantime I'll be hunting antique weapons as well.

the main thing for me is my love of hisotry. i always wanted to and still do be a history teacher. The modern production swords are generally better quality than alot of antiques, but its the possible story behind each piece that makes it special...
like the tanto ive bought on another thread ive made here. how many samurai might have comitted hari-kiri with my tanto?!?!?!

Agreed, the history is the seller of antiques. There's no telling what they may have been through. The sword on your wall could have killed a thousand men in its life time, or it could have been a shrine offering. Alternatively it could be some random sword that never amounted to anything and never saw any action at all. Or, it could be... Just been checking out that site; quite elaborate. I'd almost be afraid to order the one I'm looking at right now, there's just too much involved. Their level of options/customization is just...yikes. I've already gotten lost.

“Quality” is a relative term. Stating that modern production swords are generally better quality than antiques is a pretty broad generalization. There are many antiques that are superior to modern swords, and there are probably some modern production swords that are better than some antiques. I think one must be more specific when making such comparisons. Perhaps most modern production dhas are better quality than most antique dhas—I wouldn’t know. It probably depends on what is meant by quality. I agree that the biggest draw of collecting antiques is the history behind the piece—whether it is a possible history or a known history (a sword with provenance). What type(s) of antique swords would you consider collecting?

Myself, I'm looking for anything. There are several sabers, for insrance, offered by one eBay seller that have my eye, and most of them are within reach of this forum. Ultimately I'd like one of those priceless Japanese antiques from one or another famous smith, but for now I'm content just looking at pictures (not the price tags) of these.
ShooterMike has suggested I look into a few sabers to start off, and I've asked him about the few that look good to me, but if you have any suggestions of people, places, periods, what have you, I'd be interested in your recommendations/opinions.
Carlito, too.

Carlitobrigante, very nice piece I would've bought it in a heartbeat. Do you have any close ups of the blade? Are there any signs of differential tempering or folding/lamination?
