I've got that exact spear, planning on reviewing it soon enough. Anyways, I love the spear, but be careful with it - it's not fully tempered. However, it's so rigid and strong that it takes some effort to bend it. what part of it is not fully tempered? can it be sharpend? it looks very cool .one more thats on my list to get. Where the blade begins at that little decorated "nut." It's really not a big issue and it's rather thick.

A hewing spear will cut just as well as a sword will.

If you go to reviews at www.myarmoury.com a guy did windlass viking hewing spear, I'm not as convinced to the historical nature of it but apparently Hank Reinhardt figured that was it from his readings/observations so what do I know I got both the diamond/flat cross section Windlass Viking and Euro Spear and their scary pointy, used an accusharp on the euro to get a little bevel for easier wound channelling ....... I ...... WOULD NOT!!! want to come up against someone with one of these with anything shorter, it would be a hard fight.

The windlass euro spear doesn't scare me half as much as the greek spear which I am contemplating getting at some point, I just love the shape and best of all I can get it in AUS for a decent price. No pictures mate, but the spear I was using wasn't the windlass either. Windlass are quite good but I prefer to go with quality I know namely manning. If I had more money that guy would get a great deal of work from me. The spear also requires a measure of weight to it and requires counterbalance to cut properly. I would really like this one;

Yeah I wouldnt mind trying manning as well, also would love to get one of their 2 handed viking axes, either the thames or norway version ......... I gotta put these windlasses through some tests see what their capable of ......... although manning do theirs in spring steel which would be awesome, windlass are just forged steel untempered as far as I know

Brissy: Considering how cheap the manning axe heads are I think you would be silly to look overseas, especially considering that as I understand it mannings backlog has been met and so wait times are shorter. One day I will grab one of those amazon axes and also one of the silver inlay viking axes. There is also a sword I want from them which I finally heard back on.

Yeah postage would probably be like 10 dollars ....... aaahhhh sweet relief he he ....... yeah I'm glad I'm into all weapons types not just swords, their swords are pricey but hey virtually custom jobs really ....... They do their heat treating somewhere else though, hey what city are manning in ??

Uh, not sure where you hear that they do heat treat elsewhere but I don't think it is true, pretty sure the smith at manning does his own heat treating mate. Also I have to say that I would rather pay $700 AUD to an in country smith with no issues of customs or whatever and get an exceptionally beautiful blade than go overseas where there are just so many things that can go wrong or for a (relatively) inferior product from one of the mass producers.

Oh the heat treat thing, I asked them about a seax price and Cherilyn the lady that replied said they would send it away for heat treat, doesnt worry me I just like the fact it is heat treated ....... you speak words of wisdom blood, by the time exchange rates and postage are done its probably a fairly worthwhile investment ....... ............ been looking over the site ........... man why do I have to be so bloody poor
