I use big knives as letter openers. Once, I got a new gun safe for Christmas. I liberated the safe from its box with a kukri. That was fun. Then once I was trying to sharpen my A.G. Russell Sting when my arm started itching. The tip JUST caught me and I now have a four-inch scar across the side of my elbow. Big knives I can handle, even with fine tasks. Little knives eat me alive. A few years back, though, I was sharpening (always) a cheap-o "survival" bowie with one of those handheld units, similar to the accusharp, when my little finger apparently made its way around the guard and down the blade. A few strokes later I noticed my hands were wet. I then proceeded to fill the sink with hot water that turned immediately red and five tissues, a towel, and three bandaids later, I gave up on stopping the bleeding. The cut was still wide open a week later. Probably should have told somebody, and gotten stitches, rather than hide it and leave it alone. Then once I dropped my butterfly knife. I did get that glued, but it didn't last a day. I'm about due for another bowie, I've been neglecting them. Any recommendations?

A big sharp one, of course. Doesn't G2 do bowies? I'd go for a really cool bone or horn-handled bowie, see what kind of custom blade you can get. Bowies have really become works of art lately.

randomnobody, Take a look at the A.G. Russell site for the Browning Barker/Crowell competition knife. One hell of a knife for the price. I've beat the heck out of mine and it keeps coming back for more.

Random: If little knives eat you alive I think in the interest of your safety you should give me your bosnian, you might never get it back but it is the least I can do for a friend.

I have an old cheapy bowie that I paid fifteen bucks for 20 years or so ago. While it is a cheapy, it has a nice heavy, wide 12" or so blade. That old $15.00 bowie will do the same thing some of these $100.00 to $300.00 ones will do. I have cut up and dismembered several deer with it. If I had to fight with it I would have no worries about it. I had a nice Confederate D Guard bowie that I gave to a lady friend. I regret it now as I like that hand protection. FB

I have a few Bowie knives but the most surprising is my Winchester one (the 24.99 ones at Dicks sporting). I took it out to the woods and cut for a few hours with it (making a trail) and it would still shave afterwards(arm hair) with just a little edge rolling at the tip. I got it back with a crock stick set, went back to work and it would still slice paper after wards. I touched it up again to hair shaving sharpness. No loosening up, nor edge chipping. It went through 2" saplings in one stroke(dunno what type of tree though)!

The second post showed a knife made of 420hc steel. Like the poster there, I used to be very leary of anything wiht 420 in it. However, I have to say that the various Buck knives I have owned in 420hc have been some of the best I have ever used. I guess their Paul Bos heat makes it perfect for cutting.
The talk about various accidents reminded me of a moment of stupidity when I was a young Marine in the late 80's. We were convinced we all knew everything about knife fighting and a bunch of us were talking about our great knowledge. A friend of mine told me that a "true" knife fighter holds the knife with the blade down so no one can kick it out of your hand without getting stabbed.
Of course someone (me) had to prove him wrong and he handed me his Gerber Mk II to hold blade up. He kicked the crap out of my wrist, and just as he had predicted, the blade went flying straight up. It then spun beautifully right down into his other foot. I wish I had the moment on video. Although I cannot say that I enjoy seeing someone in pain, it was hillarious at the time because there was a few seconds after it stuck in his foot when all of us just stared at it dumbfounded. Even my friend just stared for a few seconds before the pain hit him. I will never forget that silly look in his eyes as his brain processed the severity of our screw up.
Of course, we were all lucky that it was not worse. At the time I was 17 and foolsih, and learned the hard way that blades are not anything to play with.

I bought a set of 2 humvee brand bowie knives from Big 5 on sale for about 17 dollars. Seemed ok, but I stabbed the larger one into a tree a few times and the tip bent . I hammered it back but wasn't too happy with it.

The Humvees are made by Frost Cutlery I believe. I don't know who makes the Winchester, though

I have a novice question: What exactly constitutes a Bowie? Is there a specific criteria that they fit into, or are they just really big knives? Not sure if these qualify as bowie, but these are hunting knives made of tamahagane by a master Takemoto Chen,... These blades are on loan to me from Sam Sung of Musashi Swords...

A bowie knife is considered by the shape of the original carried by Jim Bowie. The musashi ones are not bowies. If you look at this bowie; To classify a knife as a bowie as I said it needs the right shape. Whilst the shape changes slightly from knife to knife it should have the same general shape. Hope this helps and in my opinion a short bowie is a great fighting knife especially with Ninjutsu and chinese martial arts.

There is a book called Big Bowie Knife Fighting by Dwight McLemore which gives a nice overview on the history of the bowie knife. It seems the information is authentic. The first officially designed and designated bowie knife was apparently a butcher style knife forged by a friend of Jim Bowie's brother, Rezin, by the name of Jesse Clifft. Of course one can always do a Wikipedia search... en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bowie_knife
