If you click on "reply" and then when that page shows up, scroll down and you will see the two pics that Hotspur posted. They did not show up on the thread, just two boxes with tiny red Xs in them. But when I clicked on "reply" and the posts and reponses under my message box shows the two pics of the sword in question. Now I wonder why they did not show up on the thread but did on the "reply" page?!? Freebooter

I'm afraid I can't explain but let's try posting them again. Strange stuff though, they were there for some time and I just checked the hosting site, no problem there (although I have been known to run over the daily bandwidth limit). Cheers Hotspur; still not hazarding a guess on the maker

Ah! There that baby is! I love that sword for some reason. I love that sort of wide looking slightly curved blade. Take care, Freebooter

A sword came up on Ebay last week that reminded me of this thread. Then add that Master and Commander is on the tube as I type and I figured I'd add this bird here. It was listed by an estate liquidator type seller as a late 19th century cavalry officer's sword (not). It was also listed in the other swords, rapier section. I had every hope I was the only one watching it. I opened bidding on it, in hope it would go undiscovered by the vultures. I quit when I realized there were some deeper pockets watching it and had probably put in a maximum well above my budget. It did close at around $330, which would have been a tough time for me to plonk down right now and chances are this buyer was willing to go higher still. These are not a real common eagle pommel and there is every chance that this particular one might have been cutlered in the U.S. Anyway, here are three slightly enhanced pictures of it. These parrot like heads were attributed to a fellow in Birmingham named Salter but there were others borrowing, including American cutlers/makers like Rose and Starr. I hope that the auction winner appreciates what they bought and that it doesn't simply recycle back onto the market. Although I would love to see it better photographed and evaluated/described in better detail. I would have pursued it up to $400 (+), if I could have justified more debt but I have a feeling the winner would have gone further yet. I bailed at the $250 mark. Cheers Hotspur; watching the film now and waiting for the scene

I hates them eBay "deep pockets" guys!! I've come to realize that having big bucks will "win" every time - unless of course there's a bigger deep pockets guy bidding against you. I'd dearly love to have a quality eagle pommel sword someday - but one that I could cut with and not too expensive, which excludes originals. I'll just keep looking, which is at least fun and educational.

There is the eagle sabre GGGodwin sells that is a mere $215. I just wish they had a better picture of it but I have been tempted to grab one anyway. A choice of brass or nickle silver as well. (silver infantry, brass/gilt navy and artillery). I was really headed towards buying one when I committed to other things. Deepeeka just started marketing a horrid looking eagle spadroon that I wouldn't wish on anyone but the Godwin stuff looks spot on, as best as can be seen in his photos. The original eagle bargains are few and far between. There is a "theatre" knife listed on the bay right now that has an early eagle stuffed on a Japanese M3 blade. $100 buy it now and no one is jumping. Consider though that someone else is selling a dug pommel only, starting at $79. Cheers Hotspur; if I wanted a cutting eagle repro, I'd go Godwin and sharpen it upwww.gggodwin.com/19a.htm

Take care, Freebooter Well, Would you believe I watched the film and forgot to record it? The word dizzy comes to mind. The eagle pommel sword from the French captain is definitely a sabre and not a straight spadroon. A touch less than a thirty inch blade by the looks of it but really rather nice. There is a great shot of it in mid air (pulling it from the wall) that neither picture above captures. Cheers Hotspur; if not an original British made sword, a very nice copy of one
