I have been browsing the internet for a functional longsword/bastard sword and have narrowed down my choicest to 2 swords The Hanwei Rhineland Bastard sword www.kultofathena.com/product.asp ... tard+Sword and the Hanwei Tinker Longsword www.kultofathena.com/product.asp ... +Longsword Can you tell me which sword is better and why? You can also recommend different swords if you feel it is better.

Thank you for your input.
I am looking for a more later period sword so I feel the VA practical line isn't something i want (they're have been on backorder forever anyway) Generation 2 swords don't interest me. The tinker bastard is something i looked at as well, but i chose the longsword for the more acute point. The KC swords are all on backorder except the warsword. The warsword is pretty cool but it has no wooden scabbard so i have to factor that in my decision.

Tinker longsword is probably a better deal as far as handling and general awesomeness goes. The Rhinelander is a decent piece, about on a par with Windlass' 15th Century Longsword, but the H/T is probably better overall. Granted, that's reflected in the price...

cant go wrong with the tinker longsword, i think youl find bang for the buck wise youl like it better than the rhinelander.

True true, however i don't like like the pommel of the H/T Longsword. Know anywhere i can comission a different one such as a V style pommel or a scent stopper?

I like the Tinker Bastard myself
I do not consider these budget swords as the Tinker line is made of 5160 spring steel and handle great.

It's the price that makes them "budget", not the quality.

"As a general reference a Pommel or Guard in the 'general' design area of what is shown here run between $58 - $85, asymmetrical and more complex designs at the higher end (most of the disc pommels run toward the lower end and some of the more complex guards run to the higher). The grade of finish can also effect the price. If one goes to very complex, exotic designs the cost can only be worked out by examining the design in question. If you would like an exact quote just email us the details of what you are looking for and we will work it out for you." Straight off their page. Of course more complicated design will cost more, but you want a pommel that doesn't cost about 2/3 or more the price of the sword. Even half is a bit pushing it, so go with something simple

Thank you. I have visited his facebook page and have asked him about the prices of the fishtail pommels shown.

Yup, as just a suggestion, if you do decide to get the pommel, ask if you can buy the sword from Yeshua's as well because I'm pretty sure he has H/T long sword in stock for his custom swords, plus he can install the pommel for you. Best of luck ^.^

Ernie is absolutley the man for the job. This thread povides links for some work he's done for many of us, as well as some very positive feedback about him. viewtopic.php?f=10&t=15300Ernie did a fantastic job on a fishtail pommel for my H/T Early Medieval. I would highly recommend him for your pommel, if that's the direction you go. Regarding your OP, I've not owned the Rhinelander, but I did own the Longsword, and it's an excellent sword for the price.

His swords packages are just beautiful however above my budget. I have been thinking about buying a bareblade and having him make the fittings for me.
That is a epic looking EMSH!

33 bucks a week for a month is enough xD. Though if it comes down to me, I'll pay that partial and get on the queue now and then set aside how ever much you save up while waiting because I think it's a 6-8 weeks wait just for the parts to be finished, and I'd imagine they have some sort of wait list. (This is just me since when I'm buying swords, I want it in my hand ASAP...just obsessed that way)
