Looks to be a knockoff of CAS Hanwei's Practical Viking (or whatever they call the sharp ones). Solid brass can make the handles heavy. For $30, you will probably get a wall-hanger.
Havent handled this, just first impressions.

This is a wall hanger. I would put $60 more and get the practical viking from Hanwei instead if I were you. Just a thought.

Know two people who just picked up the PHaH. They are really nice for the price. There was some discussion on Myarmoury about sharpening these. The general consensus is to buy the ones that are designed to be sharpened, instead of the Practical Series. The non-Practical is built a bit thicker, and runs less of a risk of breaking. Apparently, the triple fullered PHaH is unsharpenable by hand (not sure why..) so you might need to find an older one.

While they don't look paper cutting sharp, i'd say that they probably have a false edge shouldn't be too difficult to sharpen up yourself.

Don't bother with that first viking sword. I got one from BudK with a small tear in the scabbard leather for $7. I sold it just to get it out of the house. It is in no way functional and its not even good looking once you see the real thing. Pieces look mix matched together.

yeah seriously man.....if you cant afford to spend over $100 on a sword just save up cause you'll just be wasting your money otherwise. (unless you want to hang it on a wall and never use it) I've heard good things about Hanweis H&H. there are several threads about it here too. But dont waste your money on $40 swords. you get what you pay for. not only are they not functional but they are cheaply put together (leather grips just glued not even sewen together, chrome plating that flakes off....) things like that.

the H&H? oh yeah. I heard they were decent thrusters too. Shooter Mike has done some videos and a review on it I believe. they have a hollow pommel tho, but it is quite large so maybe that compensates, counter-weight wise, to it being hollow. the large pommel coupled with a short cross guard gives it an oddly proportioned look that doesnt appeal to me but i've handled this swod and it feels sturdy. I'd give it a thumbs up.

Be aware, ShooterMikes Hand and a half was the sharp version. Which is the one I have tho it took a bit of fine tuning the edge to cut well. The practical version would take quite a bit more work on the edge to get it cutting sharp.
Jak, the pommel and cross thing put me off at first too. I gotta say tho that I rather like it now, kinda grew on me.

yeah thats what i thought but when i sharpen it will it cut good, mabye even a mat? The practicals have a thick blunt edge, they are not something that is simple to sharpen. People who I have seen do it use water-cooled grinding wheels and the like. At around 150 dollars or so at KoA you start to see some decent cutting choices, but not much bellow that. Unfortunately, that's just the market. If you purely want to just cut stuff and want to look outside Western style swords you can find decent functional katanas under 100 dollars.

grinders are a bad idea. aside from screwing up the heat treatment (negated by water fed ones) they can slip and damage the finish of the blade or bite into the edge and take a chunk out. A file is not difficult to use. Check out the method recommended on the SBG home page. I use this method and it works well and easily.you just need to invest a little time work.

Probably a good idea. Blunt swords are made to stay blunt and they'll generally fight it, which is why sharpening is such a service. I wouldn't try it myself on a Hanwei or Darksword, even Windlass, but some manage it, and AoV seems to have the latter two down. I wonder if Brian would be willing to do a special sharpening service on a Hanwei blunt for you? Might be worth a shot.
Failing that, it's certainly easier to save your pennies and buy what's already sharp. Though Windlass has some nice swords below $150, ranging all the way up, Hanwei's sharps start out around $200 in the western line, but Kult of Athena's got Cold Steel's Grosse Messer (if you're into that) for $170. The other options start at $220+ it seems.
