The spike you're talking about is called a Boat Spike or Boat Nail. They are usually made from carbon steel. I found one around Christmas at my sisters house and it was covered in rust so I brought it home and then ground all the rust off and made a short sword out of it. In Australia they're called dog spikes, not sure what type of steel they're made of. I have found some wrought iron ones from an old mining railway. Not many around now as they use the elastic fasteners, which are some sort of spring steel which the manufacturers don't give the exact composition of.
