Long story short, some ba###rd stole my favourite machete a few years ago, made for the Australian defence forces it became a handy tool, so I searched for another and came up blank. Then recently I stumbled upon a web page and took the plunge.
Disclaimer: Paid full price, don't know the company, used the Mastercard.
So starting at the first thing we all want to know -
Yes it's sharp, right out of the packaging, a moments distraction, a reverse curve blade and ouch!
Stats:
overall length 460mm or 18"
blade 330mm or 13"
handle 125mm or 5"
spine 9.5mm or 3/8"
centre 8mm
before the point grind 5mm
Weight 550gms or 19oz
These are forged from Mercedes truck springs, the process being handed down over generations.
The grip is made from horn, you can get wood, what you get seems dependant on what is available, there is a substantial brass spacer between the grip and the blade. A brass butt plate is peened on the end of the tang.
A substantial sheath is included, the inside appears to be a local hardwood with leather outside, it includes a small utility knife and a "sharpening steel"
The polish is excellent.
The balance point is hard to quantify, it appears to be around 90mm or 3 1/2", so it is very forward, almost machete like, or just like a Kukri should be. Blade lengths are available up to 770mm or 30"
There are different styles of the basic shape produced by different smiths or "Kamis" at $130 AU plus $40 postage it is both working tool and weapon, it will likely outlast me and are said to be good for 100 years, the web page and more information is here.
