True but for one thing: a narrow blade causes the target to close back on the blade while a thicker blade with more niku causes the target to open up. Essentially what happens is the top of the target falls backward in the direction of the cut, whereas with a larger niku it actually falls forward ahead of the cut. While the larger surface area does reduce the overall frictional pressure, the force being applied to the blade increases as the weight of the target falls back and closes.
Your physicist friend and you are correct, the wedging effect does reduce overall contact. This changes the applied force aspect of drag just as the lack of niku does.
The increased surface area does reduce the frictional pressure but it also induces behavior in the target which acts to increase applied force.

As luck would have it, I ran into a fellow online who has actually been making efforts to bring a Hira Zukuri katana to the production world! Maybe we'll be seeing more of them in the future...

He has gone to Kris Cutlery and Imperial forge and comissioned custom prototypes from each. He has also comissioned a kobuse folded and stone polished proto from another forge (will not disclose for the sake of his market integrity). I am currenyly working on purchasing one of the Kris hiras. I wish I had a little more money to play around with than I do. ...don't we all though?

Blast. I guess I should start asking around for my hira wak, then. I'd hate to steal your thunder with the kat. I'm still eyeing the markets for a naginata naoshi wak; if you find at a decent fixed price (auctions get outrageous ) lemme know. Likewise if you happen to find another kat. ;D

You talking production or antique? Or either? What the heck, we'll go either. Only condition is if I can't afford it, you pick up the difference for me. (kidding, of course)

It Arrived!!!!!!
After 2 days of waiting, my custom Kris Cutlery Hira-Zukuri competition cutter is finally in my hands! And boy is it...AWESOME!
This thing is a Monster! It is literal ly over a quarter-inch at the mune-machi, and tapers a little toward the kissaki, ending with a nice broad snake-head tip. The blade has some niku, as expected and desired, but not too much.
Despite it's beefiness, the Hira handles a least as well as the Kaze, which is just right for cutting.
Because this blade is 5160, the hamon is faint an only visible under certain lighting, so I am immediately going to try to etch it out a little more.
I couldn't be happier. Photos to come!

Here it is: Forgot to mention that it's in Shirasaya. I'm gonna start an ongoing review in the Sword Review section.

For comparison here is an antique hira-zukuri wakizashi (if I've got it right).
