So, on a whim, I randomly logged on to what is basically the only decent sword distributor in Sweden. So far they've mostly sold Hanwei and Windlass stuff, and I wanted to check if they carried the Hanwei Scottish backsword.
Turns out they now sell WeaponEdge swords. I honestly didn't expect that at all. I mean, I'm not 100% sure it's WE, but they have those bright blue backgrounds and everything. They have the British 1796, the French mameluke, both the shashkas and the NCO Shin-Gunto.
Sorta tempted to get the mameluke. It sells for the equivalent of pretty much exactly $300.
Worth it?

I think it pretty much depends on how much the shipping costs would be if you were to order from Historyrelics instead. $300.00 for just the sabre alone sounds awfully pricey to me. Buying direct from Weaponedge or whatever name they`re carrying on business as currently would be much cheaper for you. Sincerely and respectfully, S. Thomas

HistoryRelics is in the US, right? Honestly, if I remember the shipping rates correctly, I don't think I'd be saving any money. Especially since last time I bought something from the states, it got hit by mad taxes as well. And even if we disregard shipping and taxes completely, I'd still only be saving a couple of hundred crowns.
The benefit here is that I get the sword in like a week after ordering as opposed to two months later, all while risking the Postal Office trying to send it back across the pond. And really, if I wanted a WE sword that badly, I would have ordered one years ago.
This is just convenient, really. I almost never find swords around these parts that I might actually consider buying.

Nope. History Relics appears to be a direct sales drop box for WEI  ( Since they sign sole distributorship agreements with each of thei international retailers this is all on the quietus: as much as is possible anyway. )
Order History Relics and it gets shipped from Johdpur on DHL express. Found it to be very fast service in the US, with a backdoor drop ship into Indianapolis that sidestepped major customs bottleknecks in NY.
Have ordered 2 swords thru HR and both shipments were satisfactory.

*shrug* India, United States...
You are basically saying I should go for this sword, then?

History Relics isn't the deal it was 4 mos ago. Shipping rates have increased among other concerns. But the list price on HR includes the shipping.
As to whether or not you should get the Mamaluke.... fit and finish is good. Distal Taper is poor. It comes unsharp.
If you want an out of the box cutter, the Cold Steel Shamshir beats the sox out of the WEI.

I guess I'm just asking if there's anything particularly wrong with this sword that would make me want to save my money. I''ve just kinda been in the mood for a saber lately and thought this might be a good opportunity to get one quickly.
I'm not looking for alternatives, however. Either I buy it from the Swedish vendor or I don't buy it at all, pretty much.
How bad distal taper are we talking? I'm not expecting it to be historically accurate, but I hope it's still servicable.

One I haven't handled. Need to get some feedback from Rob Stanford (Stromlo swords USA handle)

Well, you've probably handled more WE swords than anyone else here. (Short of Rob, natch.) How do they usually average?
I recalled Freebooter owns the Military Heritage version of this sword. According to his review, the thickness runs from 5/16" to less than 3/16". (Ca 7 mm to ca 4 mm, if my conversion charts are correct.) These swords should be made by more or less the same people, right?

Hi Anders,
Which model are you after? The British marmluke or the French one? Just link or pic, I think I remember them both.
Cheers!

Oh well, if nobody has anything more to add, I suppose I'll just have to chance it.

Well, I got my saber today, and should post a review in the near future. Only, now I'm honestly not sure I've bought a Weapon Edge saber or a Universial Swords saber. I've emailed the retailer and asked, just to make sure I give credit to the right Chouhan branch. (Incidentally, I looked up the Universial Swords website and it turns out they carry like twice as many models as WE. They even had a couple of kilijs and tulwars. )

I'm interested, the arms of your saber's cross look somewhat shorter than the one in the picture above? Also, how is the grip length? The only scimitar I've handled so far (Windlass Persian) was uncomfortably short for my hand, but then I've got big hands...

Oooh, pretty kilji! I'm contacting them about those, I'll post the answers here if anybody's interested or I may make an separate thread in 'Other Asian Swords'... I've always wanted a nice kilji

It even looks like damascus to me, what do you think?

Yeah, as far as I can tell mine is identical to the one Military Heritage sells: Hence my uncertainty. It's too bad, because I liked the longer cross better. The grip is 10 cm or 4" long. Lenghtwise, it fits my hand perfectly. On the other hand, the grip is more square than round, which I personally find kinda uncomfortable.

A little sanding can fix that.

More like a lot of sanding.
Still, it's not like I couldn't fix the grip fairly easily. I'm just not 100% sure I want to keep this sword, and I'd rather sell it in mint condition.
