I prefer not thinking about a breaking machete having its saw back-edge folding toward the wielder's arm ...

It can't fold like that unless the handle also cracks open on the back and front. Which I guess is possible, but...
That design is not so much thought out as ridiculously overthought, swinging all the way around the meter and through the other side right back to abject stupidity.
I can't even fathom the rationale behind it, and I'm usually fairly good at understanding such idiocy - it can't possibly be cheaper to produce than the traditional, dead simple slab tang design, it sure as hell is nowhere near as functional, and it's not visible without dismantling the weapon so it doesn't even look kewl. It's just... what is this I don't even.

Actually, I think cheap is the rationale. Less tang means less blade to forge out, plain and simple. Less materials, less labor, and since it's hidden in the handle... who really notices?
Or wait... maybe their original design intended to have a saw hidden in the handle like their axes, then they decided to put the saw on the back of the blade instead... yeah... that must be it! lol. :?

Looks like I should retire my Parang . It served me well without failing, but that might have just been luck.

That reminds me - can somebody confirm that these are actually forged? They look like plain ol' sheet metal to me.
