h/t's are nice because also, vendors like Sonny at VA or Ernie at Yeshua's sword can make some amazing modifications to them, or in some cases completely new furniture. Plus, if you are lucky enough to grab a blunt and sharp of the same sword, you can easily swap them for sparring or drills, and then back for cutting and such.

Agreed, the Hanwei/Tinker line is probably the best for the price. I've handled the Bastard and the Longsword, and I liked the Longsword so much that my own new one should arrive Friday! As far as the sword dragging the ground, there are many options to wear the sword at an angle. I have two of these, a left and a right hand draw. www.strongblade.com/prod/sbpt-versamount.htmlGood luck with your decision, and enjoy your new sword, whichever it may be!

Thanks for the replies everyone!
I definitely see the benefit in a real sword over a sword like object. The more I think about it, the more I think I would like knowing that, even though I won't brandish it, I could if I really, really wanted to and have a real sword.
Sam H, thanks for the input on Star Fire and Sabersmith; they were the only two manufacturers that I have had the chance to see in person, so it was a good starting point. But, it sounds like Darksword Armory and the Hanwei's are the way to go.
I'll look into the Tinker line and really everything from a good brand on the Kult of Athena website.
Thanks everyone, I'll let you know what I decide to buy. Also, I"m always open to more advice, especially with putting together the entire outfit, boots or the like.

When putting together an entire outfit you should first pick a period in time that you want to re-enact. Then out of that period pick the type of person or persona you wish to portray. Research that archetype and then start working on the main stuff, shirts, pants, vests, gambesons etc. Once you get those items then start working on the little details (like jewelry that might be worn at that time and other accessories). Honestly a sword is usually the last item I'd suggest people buy when re-enacting.
Of course if you're just going to put together a kit to go to the Ren Faire with then you can actually use your imagination and so long as you can put together a good looking outfit you'll fit in just fine.
Good luck and have fun.
