Having stripped down more than one of these swords, I can tell you it is just lacquer. It comes off relatively easy and I would say adds no value as far as strength is concerned. It's simply for aesthetic value. Cecil says he prefers not to use stingray because he 'likes fish' but the pieces they sell that come from the Chinese forge have ray skin panels because the Chinese forge ignores his requests. I believe Frankthebunny posted that after a lengthy phone conversation with Cecil.

Thanks very much for the reply man - that's pretty much all I want to know about this! I got an email from Cecil also - he said that it is a gauze lacquered black and that this was sometimes used in WWII Katana.

Following your habits. I can't wait to see what you end up doing with this thing. I've always preferred utility over looks, which is why I love Kris Cutlery. A no frills company. You know that the priority is making a sturdy weapon and this sword is just that. Great review bud.
