Michiko Katana By Ryumon Review
Okay so after looking around for a while after my girlfreinds dad got me into sword collecting, i found a rather nice looking katana for £95.00, of course at first i jumped at the opertunity, its only after the order has been place i had doubts, however I was actually really suprised at how it performed
The Hamon is obviosly fake, well at least i think.
The Review
The first Impression of the sword was rather bad for me, i got it out of the box, and it felt pretty dull, and it wouldnt even go through paper, however i had to try a few bottles, after cutting sucessfully through many bottles of Cola, i even tried going through my Tougher Bottles whilst being filled with water, and having them thrown at me, all of which it cut through with ease, and the ones that didnt cut through, i shall mostly blame on my technique at the time, the sword is really well balanced and about the right weight for me, after a while i sharpend the blade and took on some more challenges other than weak cola bottles.
The mighty Milk bottle.
Ive tried cutting a milk bottle with one of the sharpest knifes in the house hold, and it requires two or more hits before the thing actually gets cut in half, suprisingly i was expecting the same with the Katana, but it did the job suprisingly well, the blade handled really well, and i honestly didnt even realise i went through the bottle, i tried the same thing again (the picture above) this time quicker and i cut through it with ease, compared to that of the knife, (not even the Point of the knife went through it)
oh and the cut going down was a control cut that i did twice and the second one went off the line.
Tougher bottles again.
Theres been one enemy of the sword since i got it, and thats a MTN Dew bottle, they seem to fly off left right and center, but the thing is i'm sad to say, after all this time blaming the Sharpness, it turned out to be my technique, again.
Suprisingly after a bit of practice using the blade practising Katas, and improving my faviorate technique whilst sparing with bokkens with it, i decided to try and cut the bottles again, this time i sliced through it twice and i didnt even feel the impact of the blade cutting the bottle at all.
Final Opinion
I Recommend this sword to people who are looking for a low budget katana that can cut well, after i took it apart I did also find out the Sword had a full tang, and a signuture on it (i didnt take pictures at the time because the camera was on charge) though the only put off on that is a marking in Black marker pen saying "27" bar that the sword is deffinatley ready for cutting straight out of the box, and should be capable of cutting almost everything (It went through the Tatami like butter sadly, i have to order some more beacuse on the first day of getting it i kinda went nuts and cut them all up)
This sword can be found on most websites, though the price has seem to gone up slightly, the last i checked it was £135. but still its a well forged sword, and is capable of cutting straight out of the box.
Pros:
Comfortable handling
Nice weight to the sword
Well balanced.
Sharp enough to cut.
Cons:
The Tsuka Ito comes loose the moment it comes out of the box.
Waxy residue inside the saya, and makes it harder to remove water after tameshigiri.
Can be a bit heavy for some users.
