First of all hi all. Newbie to swords and here. I have a cheap 1045 Shirasaya for my first. After watching that You tube video of the Canadian guy stropping, I built one. Thing is... I stropped the fake hamon right off it. The whole blade is mirror-like now. Is that a bad thing? Did I change its geometry? .... it is much sharper and shinier... bad thing ? ..... thanks.

Welcome aboard. I don't think that it's too bad a thing. Those fake hamons don't mean much, many who get a sword with one polish it off ASAP. I think that you'd be able to see if the geometry was off, as there would be an inconsistent plane on one side.
I hope you like it here. It's full of some really cool, knowledgeable guys and gals. Have fun.

Welcome to the forum man! If you're really concerned about the geometry of your blade you can take a vid/pics and show us exactly what's going on but IMO it's better to have a blade without the wire-brushed hamon as it will be easier to maintain its sharpness as adrian.jordan said.
Again welcome and we're all looking forward to helping you learn and learning from you!

Wow...thanks for all the Welcomes you guys... appreciate it. I think the geometry is ok. Waiting on a already assembled tsuka I ordered. I stareted polishing the brass habaki with. Mothers and two coats of gold came off to reveal mirror silver just like the blade. Is this a steel habaki ?...... pics attached. I hope.

Yea, painted two coats of different gold. Just wondering if its steel. And should I replace it WITH brass.

Check it with a magnet. I think the steel looks fine and would not worry about it. Welcome!

Some stainless steels do not attract magnet. Let hope that it is stainless steel. The other possibility is zinc. If it is zinc, get rid of it.

If it wasn't a habaki I'd say to spark-test it. If it didn't spark, it would be pot-metal; if it did, it would be some variety of steel. But it's a habaki, which is in an exposed area, gotta keep it looking nice... ah well.

Hmmm...well its a Musashi Shirasaya... so its cheap.... may be just pot metal. Don't think I wanna play with electricity with it... I already cut the index finger to the bone stropping it :-( ...stupid newbie....lol.
