I am looking to get a set of hakama and a gi. I know I will need an iai obi as well. Can anyone tell me anything about this set? I know not what to look for really. A guide or something would be helpful. I figure tetron is not the best quality for it, given the price. But I just want to have the clothes, I dont care if they are the best. Is it at least as soft as cotton? I also have no clue how to tie them up once I get them. Some tips on that would be useful as well. www.e-bogu.com/Iaido_Gi_BLACK_Te ... -giset.htm It has a sizing chart, but I'm pretty slender so I'll fit in just about anything, I am 6 foot and I weight 150 lbs. Thanks guys!

The keikogi is a kendogi, it's kind of a thicker almost towel-like material that can help slightly pad a shinai blow. Tetron is a synthetic blend that is thinner like regular cotton, its a little stiff and coarse at first (like a starched shirt) but loosens up pretty nicely after a few washes and even gets a slight almost cotton-like softness. It keeps it's own nice ironed/formal appearance pretty well (much better than cotton anyway).
Theoretically for informal practice you can wear either as long as your sensei/dojo doesn't have strong feelings against it. In my dojo it's not uncommon for iai students to wear kendogi in the winter because it's thicker/warmer. At testing/embu/taikai we always wear iaigi but my sensei doesn't mind kendogis being worn during regular practice. If you don't have a sensei/dojo then it really doesn't matter anyway.n
As far as sizing goes I don't really know any tips. My sensei had me try on a few gi and hakama we had in stock at the dojo to find the right size. Unfortunately I'm between hakama sizes as far as length so mine is slightly too long in it's off-the-rack state, I may or may not get it hemmed up a touch, I'm pretty much already used to it now anyway...
A quick Google search results in plenty of tutorials for wearing obi and hakama. Different sensei/dojo do it slightly different so there's no one hard standardized way to do it, the tutorials out there should work fine.

Why not asking your sensei?

there are no dojo around here really, so asking my sensei is impossible. Like everything else I know about swords, I have to ask here, and learn for myself.
Krelian, thanks for the info. I am looking around to find some information on all the tying. I will be wearing a kat/wak daisho while practicing so I need to learn ho to tie them both together.

Have you considered having a long-distance sensei? For example, Konjaku Kioi Dojo of Femal Sensei has special program for people who live in place where there is no dojo. You comes to his dojo for one weekend. Come home, practice on your own for a while and return several months later for another weekend training. In the mean time, there are also seminars. Reference: www.nihonzashi.com/samurai_sword_school.aspxwww.toyamaryu.org/There maybe other schools like that. But that is the one I know. Caveat. I am not a student of Femal Sensei nor am I a student of Toyama Ryu.

I got mine from e-bogu also and the tetron is fine. I'm 6'2" and 170 and got the right sizes from their online charts. I also got the kaku iai obi. Tying the hakama and obi are no big deal however with some attention to detail neatly tied beats sloppy loose in appearance and function. Just takes practice. Here's a couple youtube vids on the obi tying. Note most tie in front and slide the obi and knot around back. The one guy ties in back with a more complex knot. Good luck. I have that set . I just used the sizing chart they had and was just right with the hakama but their size 2 for the gi is a bit big on me. (but then im small ) But it works just fine. I havent worn it that many times but it is softening up with use. I have the kaku obi from there too and the same goes for that it was a little stiff at first but is nice and soft and comfortable now. Tying is an ordeal at first but gets easier each time you do it. I just watched videos to learn how to tie mine.

That first link, that's an amazing price. I have E-bogu's tetron hakama...have had them for years now and they have held up well. You can't beat that price. Just follow the online sizing chart as suggested and you will be fine. I would also check Ebay for a nice kaku style obi. See here...$32 and you get your choice of obi colour. www.ebay.com/itm/white-brown-blu ... 6fc456ff9b

It seems E-bogu has similar obi for around the same price. I'll probably just order it all together. I keep going back on whether this is a good buy, but I'd really love to just have them to walk around the house. They look so damn comfy.

Yeah a haori is definatly in my list of wants. What is it that a samurai wears over his "shirt"? This is an example on Ujio. I need not say who he is as we all know. One of my favorite samurai in cinema.

It's a KAMISHIMO, and is formal wear. It's the hakama+wing-thingy.

I'm curious about haori also, I can never seem to find a size to fit me and they're all... Antiques? Maybe I'm looking in the wrong place?
