Thanks for the review Dave,
Judging from the stats you've provided, they seem to handle even worse than the newer Deepeeka spatha (those with serial number that ends with "N"), and those Deepeeka spatha are $100 cheaper don't have distal taper. Can't believe I've actually said than since WIndlass swords typically handles better than their Deepeeka counterpart.

This may be a little spiffier than a Deepeeka effort, but the results are about the same. Looks like Windlass just followed the Marto parameters and is waiting for the cash to flow in from the movie fans. Bummer. A little reengineering of the blade would have pulled the pob back to something realistic and made this a fun sword. That's my biggest complaint.

Great photos. I got the same sword the same day. It was way bigger and heavier than I anticipated. I took it out, photo'ed it and put it in my closet. It is so heavy, it actually is uncomfortable to hold for any length. A very attractive piece and I watched the movie to gauge its similarity. Russell Crowe actually wields two versions of the same sword. In one scene he has a pommel where I swear I can see the flush screw. In another scene the pommel has an exposed bulbous nut visible, this is the sword that is left embedded in a tree.

Hopefully you can find someplace suitable to display your sword. It IS a very handsome gladius.
The more you handle it the more you will train your muscles to use it. Not saying you'll ever really be comfortable with it, but the more familiar you become with it, the easier it will be to handle.
Wouldn't try cutting anything with this, unless you really know what you're doing.
Cheers

Damn I was quite excited about this sword but i've handled deepeeka spathas and they were much too heavy and unwieldy. If this is in any way similar, I think I will forget about this one. By the way how is the tang on this, its not like the tang on the windlass conan swords is it?

Not inclined to strip this down. Too much ornamental brass and a plastic grip to get hinky. I've discounted this as a practical sword. The 2 inch wide blade disqualifys it more than the 30 in length. That leaves Albion. But with a $700.00 sword tag and another $450.00 for the harness, I just need a functional spatha that badly.

Actually the Albion is closer to $800 plus shipping. The Del tin 2070 Roman Calvary sword that is "inspired" by the 4th century spatha from Koln, is pretty decent sword for the money. It has similar dimension as the orignial including the lenticular blade. Of course the grip is inaccurate as it is covered with white lacquer to mimic the bone handle of the original, and the steel plate should be made of brass. Probably handles a bit heavy compared to the original but still in the ballpark of a heavy duty spatha. Not as good as Albion next gen spatha, but for the price, it is a decent sword. Deepeeka has recently released some decent newer spatha and gladius hispaniensis, but they still need plenty of grinding to add the proper distal taper. Won't be too difficult since their blade is a little soft .

Hi, I have quick question to the reedition Maximus sword owners. Is the blade also stamped "Gladiator TM, copyright 2000, Dreamworks LLC and Universal Studios" as the first edition or no stamp? Thanx.
As far as I can compare it from your pics to mine genuine Windlass it looks abslotutely the same, except the groove in the pommel ball.

Saw your post last nite and didn't check the sword until this morning.
The reissue has no licensing stamp. Came with the Windlass sticky on the blade.

I wondered about this one, and feared that the handle was indeed plastic... alas, those fears have been confirmed. Another great, short and sweet review Dave. I love hearing about your collection and seeing the pictures. Would you perhaps consider adopting me?

Nah. Sorry. Nothing less than marriage will work. And you'll have to bring a big fat dowery to support both our bad habits.
