I'm not personally too keen on anything by Cold Steel, but I thought I'd heard of some of our members owning Ti-Lites? Anyway, following a discussion with a fellow at work this morning, I could no longer resist, and ordered this one: www.uniqueblade.com/products/Sti ... 65-18.html I didn't realize before that these knives are made by the same fellow whose site I linked separately. The prices are the same on both (and the cheapest of any source I found; granted I only did a very minimal search) but the shipping is far, far less. I got expedited shipping for about $7. Sure beats international shipping for $40-whatever-it-was. Of course, I'm kicking myself because 1) I'm saving to have an old sword polished 2) I'm trying to take advantage of holiday hours and get some debt put away 3) I paid with credit. But what the hell, I've been wanting a good stiletto and have been lusting over this thing since I found it...so we'll see how it turns out.

Congrats on your recent purchases, Bogus and Random! I finally opened this thread and was surprised to discover that it wasn't about medieval stiletto daggers. :?
When I was growing up, we referred to the type of knife that you guys bought as a switchblade, and the ones with the blade coming out of the top (like Ralph Macchio's in The Outsiders) as a stiletto. Not that my parents would let me buy either one, dammit!! Luckily, nowadays the folders with the flip-assist lever on the blade are legal and just as fast as an automatic.

Arguably the term "stiletto" is only somewhat applicable to this specific knife blade, but all I'm finding is that "stiletto" is simply a term used to refer to a narrow-bladed knife used exclusively for thrusting with little to no cutting capabilities. Thus it is technically accurate when applied to this type of knife, as the blade profile goes, but it's also arguable that the blades aren't quite "stiletto" caliber. But since Italy started making these and selling them as "stiletto" knives, they have become stiletto knives. Switchblade, meanwhile, is just any ol' folding (or otherwise collapsible) knife with an automatic opening mechanism, ie. a "switch" involved. For instance, this: www.uniqueblade.com/products/9_C ... 93-18.html ...is a "switchblade," but not a "stiletto." So...yeah...what were we talking about, again? :?

Oh, I'm not trying to argue what the name of these knives are, just sharing what kids in my neighborhood called them growing up. And certainly none of us were authorities on the subject!

I know, I've been trying to gain some enlightenment on the subject, myself. Just haven't found much...

Man, I'm bad at this waiting thing, somehow.
I keep thinking to myself, "Why isn't it here yet?" Then I realize, "Oh, right, because I only ordered it three days ago."
Strangely, this has never been a problem with pre-order stuff. I'm fine waiting several months for stuff if I know it will be several months...but when ordering in-stock merchandise...I have a tendency to expect it within the same week. Then again, these days, that should be standard for domestic orders; especially if, when I order something from Japan, I get a shipping notice the next day, and three days later I have it.
All I've gotten from Unique Blades so far is an "Order Complete" notice, two days after the "Order Confirmation."
To think, I'm the one rolling my eyes when the rest of you complain about orders and shipments taking too long...but here I am...

Yay, it's here! Came in a bubble-envelope inside a box...good enough for me. Had a bit of culture shock, though, in opening the box. It suddenly dawned on me that I was sitting at a desk in Virginia, using a knife from Spain (my Albacete) to open a package from Florida that contained a knife from Italy... Boy, my money sure does get around, eh? Snapped some quick picks with my phone, since 1) I can't find my camera 2) Photobucket app is just easier. Here you go: Quite tough to get good photos of, since the lighting in my room is generally bad on a good day, and today is just one of those ugly days, top it off with my LED FLASH (HOLY [obscenity]) and well...yeah. I'm very, very pleased with the horn. When I pulled the knife out at first, I thought they'd sent me the wrong one. My eyes went straight to the black, then finally noticed the rest. (reference image: www.uniqueblade.com/images/products/fb-103.jpg If that doesn't work, a reminder of the page on the vendor's site: www.uniqueblade.com/products/Sti ... 65-18.html ) As you can see, what I got was quite different from the picture on the site. BUT...that's just one of the reasons I love real horn. Kind of like the "White horn" on my Valiant Co. Bosnian, which is actually this color. Then again, the wood grip of my Gen2 Norman Dagger has a nearly identical pattern. Mmm, natural materials. They're just so...natural, you know? To hell with plastic, pearlex, or metals. Anyway, the knife was very, very stiff out of the box. The sliding lock takes a lot of effort to move and the swiveling bolster release mechanism was very, very tough. The action, though, is smoooooooth~~ Knife leaps into play and stays there. I'm impressed. It's "factory sharp," which could be brought around with ease; it's no worse than the last bunch of knives I got in. I don't think I'll mess with it, though; this is purely a show piece. Shame these are illegal. Here's a shot of it with my J.J. Martinez, a knife I carry daily with, as you can see, near-identical dimensions. Remember, the OAL of the stiletto is 9", and the J.J. Martinez's blade is 10cm, for you metric folk.

Nice lookin' knife, Random. I like the horn a lot, and with the flash it almost looks like mother of pearl on the backside.

Thanks. It does, sort of, doesn't it? Struck me as something, but I couldn't figure out what. Mother of Pearl may just be it. I do wish I could tone down the flash. I just switched to a new ROM and am still learning the camera settings, there's bound to be a way...

If it is illegal, how did you purchase it? Any hope a Canadian can order one of these without it being examined by customs?

If your camera has a setting for low light without flash try that, then just play with the lighting of the room. I've had some success with that, though my pictures don't usually turn out the greatest.

Well, see, that's the funny bit. They're legal to own, but illegal to carry. There may or may not be some kind of permit one might acquire, such as for automatic rifles, but I haven't bothered to look. I don't know how Canada handles their regs, but I'd probably not chance it, since I've heard horrible things about Canada.
That's what I used to know where to find on the old ROM...this one's got it hidden somewhere and I'm still looking.
