O.K. guys, I have a big request to one of you. The thing is, I'm a BIG fan of berserk manga/anime and always liked the big-ass sword the main character has with him. I've never really wanted swords from anime, but this one is just to close too me I'm talking about this baby right here: It's the Dragon Slayer, the last sword he has (as of now). The things I like in the design are hexagonal blade the tip and the handle. I want to have an usable adaptation that has preserved all the mentioned design elements and at the same time be usable/manageable. this means that the blade has to come down from 2 ton to somewhere 2 kilo  (I don't really know how much exactly, but heavier blade would be hard to wield I guess) It has to be made shorter, thinner and narrower. I don't have exact measurements in my head, but I guess it will be something like a longish 2 handed viking sword... Also, I suck at drawing so want to ask one of you guys to draw up a little sketch in free time. As a sign of my gratitude, multiple karma is guaranteed for the kind person who draws it Thanks edit: edited some spelling and grammar stuff...

Despite not having read Berserk, there's something about Guts' sword that's always appealed to me, if only it weren't so freaking huge. I'll see what I can whip up.

Thank you very much, first karma coming through  as for the topic: 1 - You should definitely read berserk. I'm much more into anime than manga, but this was the manga that made me read it till the end (I've tried with lots of others without success). 2 - the thing that is appealing to you is its shear epic... what else could it be  by the way, I've heard that john lundemo already made berserk sword, though not a dragon slayer, but anyways... here are the two pics I could find: looks pretty darn good. the dragon slayer should be at least as good looking as this, or maybe even better  edit: opted out of karma huh... ok, then, just, thanks

I still need to finish up attempting the distal taper and gradients, but so far I changed the pommel to something a little more Viking-esque; other than that, I've kept as many design elements from the original as I could, including the hook on the guard to carry it on your back. Also, while it's not called such, BKS also did a Dragon Slayer:

wow, that thing looks just badass. yeah it's not a DS but still, SWEET I mean no one would try to make a sword from other anime, bleach for example (or would they?)

Well, Bleach has semprini-loads of wallhangers available; one or two are actually functional, but those are regular old katana shaped swords. If we're talking about the weird shapes (and sizes) the swords can take, then there are a few that could be made in functional versions, but they'd have to be custom made. Anyways, I'm done: Overall Length: 45" Blade Length: 35" Blade Width: 3" at the base; 2.4" right before the point taper Grip Length: 7" Guard Width: 5" (2" long) The blade exhibits almost ridiculously drastic distal taper to keep it as light as possible, starting at 1/8" (3.175mm) and then rapidly tapering to 1/16" (1.5875mm); in fact, the last 15" or so of the blade is so thin it doesn't show up against a white background. It'll still be heavy, even with this, but hopefully with the massive guard and pommel (each 1.6" thick), most of that weight will be in the hilt to keep the balance point from at least being in BFE. The pommel is a Geibig Type 8, which is reminiscent of, but quite a bit different than, the original, which I'd call a massive squared off Type T (scent-stopper). It's basically my way of reworking the design a bit instead of just plain ol' resizing it, which would have been boring; besides, it's 2" wide, 1.5" long, and 1.6" thick of solid steel. Any more and we'd be getting ridiculous. It'd still probably come in at about 10-12lbs but go any smaller and it just wouldn't be worth calling a Dragon Slayer; as is, it may be heavy and probably unwieldy, but dammit, it looks like it can hack through a dragon neck!

that's really good, like how it turned out. but is the handle a two hander? maybe adding it a little bit of extra length wouldn't be bad. something like this for example: don't pay attention to the shoddy Microsoft Paint job...

It might; I just went with a 7" grip because it's about the size of a longsword overall.

Just to see it, can you try the original pommel VIncent? I like the rework but y'know.. more sword-y things to look at is cool too.

You mean like this? I increased the overall length 2.5", so overall, it's now 47.5"; .5" went to the new pommel (which, by the way, was just a quick edit that took all of 2 minutes, so don't be too harsh on it), while I added 2" to the grip to give it a 9" grip.

I'd say original pommel and longer grip look better... the john lundemo maelstrom sword is about 8 lbs and thats about 3.5 kilos, right? the stats of that one are as followos: Specs: Overall Length: 59.25" Blade Length: 41.5" Blade Width at Base: 3.75" Blade Width near Tip: 2.5" POB: 5" COP: 28" Grip Length: 13.5" Guard: 6" X 1.25" Weight: 8lbs so why a sword 10 inch shorter should be heavier than this I guess dragon slayer should be at least the same weight (if not even lighter) than the maelstrom... the only thing left is to save up some cash and commission a custom maker to forge this beast edit: here's a link to the thread of maelstrom on swordforum - www.swordforum.com/forums/showth ... Well, the Maelstrom also has several fullers and looks to be a lenticular cross-section as opposed to hexagonal, which would conceivably make it about the same weight or maybe a little lighter/heavier. I don't know enough about forging to make a definite call.

yeah, I'm not sure about the weight of a non-existent sword myself but one thing I am sure of is that I want one !!!

 That's more or less my thought process regarding my design, Ithin; how am I supposed to know how a 26" blade katana will handle if you stick it on an 8" jian hilt with solid bronze/steel fittings? I still want one, though.

well, it sounds like it would be a very fast sword, with the pob very near to handle....

Another berserk fan! my 2 handed viking sword i just finished up is "inspired" by the swords Guts used prior to getting the Dragon Slayer, thus my design isnt 2 feet wide, but heres the stats on mine blade length- 35 1/2 in Handle Length- 10 1/2 inches Weight- 3-5 lbs' blade width- 2.25 inches at shoulder tapering to 1 1/2 inches at tip P.O.B.- not sure yet, however it comes out honestly. Thickness- undetermined by me, but it will be as thin as possible without being Floppy to save on weight. I currently have a full scale blueprint of it finished, but i dont have pics of it sorry.
